Guess I'm not thinking of a bike lane in that situation.

its one of the dangers of bike lanes

bike lanes are generally on the right side of the road and if there is no stop sign and a car is making a right turn, they might turn right in front of a bike

Yup. Almost all of my right-turn incidents have come when I'm in the bike lane and a driver cuts in front of me to turn. 100% drivers fault.

If he's in a bike lane that's correct.

There is no designated bike lane on Cary Street.

I don't think any cyclist in this thread is taking the cyclist's side in your situation. Passing on the right must be done lawfully.

I live in Va Beach and I've had this happen twice.

In Virginia Beach there's a very nice walking+biking trail that runs behind the neighborhood along Shore Drive, through First Landing State Park, and all the way down to the oceanfront.

Anyway, I was riding my bike at a brisk pace on that trail one day when up ahead there was a middle-aged couple walking my way from the opposite direction. I yelled at them "Coming between you!".

I thought it was funny. After their panic subsided, so did they.

True story... my SO works in law enforcement and worked the scene of this accident involving this cyclist who riding down a rural road around our house. The guy wasn't looking up while riding, for apparently a good while, and ran into the back of an Asplundh wood chipper that was parked on the side of the road. Luckily for him, the wood chipper wasn't on, but the dude had some serious head injuries even with his helmet on.

Probably already been said, but if the cyclist was in a bike lane, you have to yield to them when turning across it, just like you would for cars in their own lane. If no bike lane, he is an idiot for passing on the right and should know the risk.

A cyclist can either take the entire lane or ride along the right of the road. Which would would you prefer?

I'm sure this has been said numerous times but, good. Bikers are assholes who need to map their route with respect to busy roads.

There's a special place in hell for the spandex knob gobblers who "cycle" down College at 4 pm.

Why is "cycle" in quotes?

What about motorcycles? They move in and out of lanes going 70 mph. And then we are supposed to "Please watch out for motorcycles". Nope.

Commuting is not "playing in traffic". You probably complain about rush hour traffic too? Bikes reduce traffic.

On LSU campus last year, I let a guy cross by the guard shack on darlrymple. He passed in front of me behind the guard shack. I made a left on the other side of the shack onto the street by the music building...and the exact same idiot rode into the door of my suv.

I got out to see if he was okay, and he had the nerve to get loud with me, even though he was either biking in a crosswalk or traveling the wrong way on the street. When I highlighted it and the dent in my door, he suddenly felt much better and hopped on his bike to ride off.

I may have kicked his front tire so hard I bent the spokes, he fell, and called the cops for me.

He was ticketed. Camera in shack showed NOTHING.

Did Army basic at Ft Lewis Washington a long time ago. We were standing in formation one morning in the street in front of the weapons room - standard procedure and a bike rider (Permanent station guy - not a basic training soldier) came screaming down the road. The guy was leaning down pedaling like crazy not watching where he was going and he ran into the end of our formation. Took five or six guys out and broke a guy's leg - bent at a crazy right angle and he was screaming. The other guys had cuts or were banged up.

They brought in the MPs and hauled the guy away. Pissed off our Drill Sargent who was screaming at the bike rider for "messing up my formation."

The rest of us (non injured personnel) went for a two mile run and then chow hall for breakfast. Never saw the broken leg guy again. His stuff was out of the barracks when we got back that night.

Doing something widely known as unsafe is playing in traffic. It is a very high risk and I just do not know of any other way of saying that. Hell, I don't trust drivers when I am in the safety of my own vehichle, I am damn sure not going to put my life in their hands knowing the odds. Play on.

I've started riding in the last year or so and have always followed the rules of the road when there's a vehicle in the vicinity.

I've never yelled at any drivers but I've had plenty of drivers lay on their horn at me. For no reason.

People in cars don't really comprehend what's going on outside their vehicle.
