I've had numerous pilots tell me that airbus' autopilot is unsafe. That's the reason I avoid it.

One, let me note that this is absolutley horrible and I hate it for the families. But I for some odd reason am absolutely fascinated by commercial air disasters. One of my favorite shows is Mayday/Air Disasters.

Based on your comment I remember watching one (actually a couple but this one in particular) that echoed your sentiment. A russian airbus went down cause the pilot let his kid up into the cockpit and put him in the seat. The kid was playing with the controls (trying to steer it) and it disengaged the auto pilot for I want to say the ailerons? The autopilot was still engaged EXCEPT for that one control and it sent the plane into an unexpected spin because the pilots couldn't understand why they were turning on autopilot until it was too late.

Since then I have noticed several issues where pilots didn't understand the capabilities and the limits of the airbus autopilot. It may be all autopilots but they basically said what another poster said: pilots are so fixated on monitoring everything else that they'll miss a few things with the autopilot. But I am no expert at all.

Same here. That show "why planes crash" is fascinating to me. I have a few pilot friends who refuse to watch it which is a mistake IMO bc they need to learn from the mistakes of others.

Kinda interesting indeed. Think of the mistakes you made in your job when you first began, up until today. Most are just a my bad situation and that's the end of it. Not really the case here several thousand feet off the ground

I'm guessing they have a more reliable source of that kind of info besides a TV show.

Ugh, I would be considerably more worried about the nazi regime roaming the country. Here's to hoping you're white and blonde.

(If we're playing the it's happened before, it's got to continually happen game my comment isn't so dumb is it?)

Mix in a couple of pre-flight prayers while you're at it.

The show has FAA and TSA investigators who train pilots and make industry standards, but carry on.

Anyway, the main reason my pilot friends don't watch it is bc they don't want to be reminded of just how helpless the pilots were in many of these crashes.

Ya, if I told her we flew not only LH but that same aircraft BCN-Frankfurt she'd freak.

Have one 320 MSY - LAX on next trip with a 330 on another segment. Everything else Boeing. You've made me paranoid.
