See, First Blood I never put in my pantheon. First Blood is a serious film. First Blood Part II is an action movie.

Right, First Blood is a drama and a thriller that has some action in it but its not an action movie.

The correct answer is of course as has been stated throughout the thread, Die Hard.

I don't think so - separate genre and some overlap with "Epics".

I feel like 300 could easily be classified as an "action movie."

And it's a fricking great one.

Love me some Raiders obviously. But my favorite Indiana Jones movie is The Last Crusade.

Maybe - probably more likely to be a "war movie" - and visually stunning, if historically laughable.

Anyone watching 300 for a history lesson deserves to be laughed at.

And I enjoyed the film - I don't rank it as "great" but it borders on it at times.

My problem is the whole "what might have been" dilemma -

Gates of Fire - a fantastic historical novel by Stephen Pressfield (comparable to Killer Angels for Gettysburg) - was optioned for film. Michael Mann was set to direct. Bruce Willis AND George Clooney were set to star, there was some discussion over who would play Leonidas (probably Willis) and who would play Xerxes (probably Clooney) - but they didn't get everything wrapped up and Michael Mann made that terrible Miami Vice film, instead.

THAT would have been a Thermopylae film really worth watching, IMHO.

Unleashed

The action in this movie has no bounds. Jet Li literally grabs a dude by his head and smashes his face into the ground multiple times in the first fight scene. I marked out pretty hard.

Die Hard
T2
Aliens
Predator

Those movies set the standard and hold up remarkably well.

For the record, I had Die Hard on top for a long time until I watched Hard Boiled a few years ago. Commando is pretty awesome too.
