You can also cut horizontal grooves in the wood on the inside leading up to the exit hole. The chicks can climb these groves using their beaks and feet. That's what I do.

They don't have wire mesh in the wild.

Well I've been doing this for ten years or so and I'm tring the grease. Might try the PVC as I have two more boxes to put up. I once put a house 24 foot up in a tree 100 yards from the water and the hatched two batches out of it until a swarm of bees got into the house one year, so I went with the 10 ft conduit 3/4 inch. I've also use cypress leaves that fall in the fall as that is what is more natural but cedar lasts a long time and is more bug resistant they say. Learned something I think on the grease, what kind? Just wheel bearing?

I have built a bunch over the years, but this is one I built out of heart pine. Built it for a mount I will never shoot because I haven't hunted duck in years.

Whoever owns that box needs to take off the round fence post immediately and use a 4x4. It's not a snake haven if it's done properly.

Recently opened my wood duck box to find several eggs that I believe are wood duck eggs. Too large to be from blue birds or sparrows, etc. Slightly smaller than a chicken egg. I quickly closed the door and left the area. I can watch the box from a window during daylight hours using a spotting scope. This morning, there was a pair (I think so, anyway) of blue birds going in and out of the box. Will the mama wood duck chase them away and keep using the box?

Congrats, figured it wouldn't take long to get some eggs in there. Females aren't territorial so they won't be chasing any birds out of there. I honestly wouldn't be concerned, they were probably flying around the box. I took this photo late last week and was pumped because I only saw her go in the box once. Looks like we both got some action.

I hung mine last Saturday morning.

I went with a 10.5' piece of galvanized aluminum top rail for fencing. I placed them out in the water about 10 yards from the closest tree. We drove the pipe about 4 feet in the ground and hung the boxes about eye level. I just greased the shite out of the poles from about 6 inches above the water line to the bottom of the box.

We'll see...

Cedar shavings work best. Need the chicken wire or grooves. Mottled ducks and whistling tree Ducks will use boxes too but only in certain areas. Put the thing out because there is another nesting/hatching period coming.

Not sure if this will work, but I'm attempting to add two photos of mama wood duck leaving the box and returning to the box. Photos taken by a game cam positioned nearby.
