32 second video of 747 landing at the famous Maho Beach at St. Maarten

I've been there and it's pretty wild to watch the planes land practically right on top of you.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I thought a video from the Caribbean would be appreciated on a nasty winter weather day like today.
and enjoy the rest of your winter.

And one more of a 747 takeoff

I've seen those videos hundreds of times, and my question is this: Why are 747's flying into this tiny island in the Caribbean? Are that many people flying there? Hell there is rarely a 747 at MSY anymore...

I don't think there has EVER been 747 service to NOLA. We don't have a single 747 gate.

KLM flys in from Europe a couple days a week if I remember correctly. That's the only 747 flying in and out of SXM while I was there.

I've sat on that beach and watched the planes pass what seems like just feet above me. It's pretty awesome.

I think KLM is the only 747 flying there and it continues down to Aruba I think. Air France flys an a340 I think. They do this because the island is a Dutch/French country andthey offer non-stop service from Paris and Amsterdam.

Runways are too short I believe.

It's not that. (AF1 and others can land here) and the Runway is longer than Princess Juliana. It's more so that NOLA is not an 'Intercontinental' airport. There are no long haul direct flights that require a wide body aircraft like that.

The vast majority of MSY flights are 737 sized craft.
I think we only have International to Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada.

MSY runways can handle 747s, there just isn't enough demand for regular service.

747s come into MSY as charters from Europe sometimes. Ohio state even charted a 747 for the Sugar Bowl.

I thought at one time Delta had a nonstop to CDG from MSY, which I assume would be on a 747. I could be completely making that up, though.

Today Air France announces new daily service to New Orleans Moisant International Airport utilizing 777-200ER equipment. Air France, a member of Skyteam, will be the only European airline to serve New Orleans. The city of New Orleans, a unique city with important connections to France and French culture, has shown tremendous growth over the past several years. Located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, New Orleans is an important business location for the transportation industry, as well as the telecommunications and technology sector.

"Air France has long desired a route to New Orleans because of its historical and economic links to the nation of France," said Air France Chairman Jean-Cyril Spinetta. "The fact that the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce was able to offer the airline numerous incentives for beginning this flight only made it that much more of a possibility." "Delta was very successful in its one stop flight from New Orleans to Paris before the attacks of September 11, and they were a major force behind our goal of linking two centers of French culture," said Christopher Korenke, vice president and general manager of Air France USA.

Flew into Grenada two weeks ago that runway gave me the feeling of a water landing until touchdown. The plane was smaller just a 737.
