I think gladiator is a good blockbuster flick. It's entertaining, but I just don't understand people trying to make it out to be an all time great. It's pretty quickly forgettable to me. There's much about the simplistic stupid presentation of the message in braveheart that bothers me. It tries really hard to be something that it isn't. Apart from my personal views I can see how the same thing could be said about it that I said about gladiator. At best I see both as entertaining but forgettable high budget blockbusters with very little substance. The patriot is just a stupid, bad movie that manages to be at best pretty entertaining for how over the top it is.
I agree that there are a lot of way better historical war movies out there. This last week I watched das boot, and I thought it blew the three previously mentioned movies out of the water. Just for a start.

quote:well, I'm no movie snob, but I really didn't like The Dark Knight Rises. I thought it was pretentious, overblown, and boring.
I'm sure we'll get a lot of Dark Knight Rises responses. It was universally acclaimed by critics and filmgoers alike, yet the movie snobs on this board believe it to be the worst movie to come out this decade.
And honestly, whenever I hear the words "film snob", I think about that movie, and how it seems anybody who disliked it was basically labelled an idiot.
Overall, I tried to like Gravity, but just could never get over how comically stupid and wrong George Clooney's death was. For something that seemed to strive for realism, that obvious gaffe blew it for me.

Yeah it was just too cheezy for me. I couldn't deal with it.
