Defensive pass interference enforcement is a topic to watch in the wake of the Lions' controversial playoff loss to the Cowboys. Vincent suggested an alternate solution to replay that would make PI a 15-yard penalty rather than a spot foul. There's concern that making pass interference reviewable would undermine game officials, who have to make difficult calls in real time.

"We must keep in mind that officials and players are moving at game speed, and those of us who are making decisions on rules have the luxury of slow motion video," Vincent said. "Sometimes game speed and rule changes aren't always compatible."

Giants president John Mara told Battista the proposal with the best chance to pass is allowing review of hits on defenseless receivers. Even that is far from a guarantee, however.

I like the rule as is but the refs suck so much that the rule gets abused... so I support changing to 15 yard PI.

That would be terrible, CFB should change their rule to a spot foul.

sounds like a wash.

they won't change anything.

personally, I think the illegal contact fouls are ridiculous.

take them out and that's a big start in my opinion.

Defensive pass inference doesn't get abused. It was called 15% fewer times in 2014 vs. 2013. The refs are largely blowing it on illegal contact which is only 5.

College DPI at 15 yards is tolerable because of less insistence on the vertical passing game and you don't see deep ball receivers get too clean very often with a ball on target that prompts a DB in the area to bite the 15 over TDs. That would be abused far more by NFL DBs and staffs.

Agreed

The way WR just have to bitch to the refs and they get 45+ yard PI is insane

Needs to change. Spot of the foul is dumb. College rule is much better.

This would be nice.

However, IMO, if you are going to take away the spot foul, I think they need not to go to the college distance, a 20 or 25 yard penalty is fine for professional athletes to get used to. The penalty is still harsh, but it won't completely flip the field.

Or if they want to get really weird, they can do 15 yard penalty up to 30 yards downfield, then do half the distance of the throw. So PI on 40 yards would be 20, 50 yards, 25. Using 5 or 10 yard increments to make the math easy. So 30-39 (15 yards); 40 - 49 (20 yards); >50 (25 yards) or do it in 5 yard increments to be more "exact."

Probably dumb but I just came up with it.

I just always hated the assumption that the receiver would catch the ball that downfield spot fouls do, but I think splitting the baby is best.

If it's going to stay a spot foul, coaches should be able to challenge it. But if they allow a challenge for it, they should eliminate either the commercial after extra points or the retarded 2 minute "warning" commercial breaks.

So it benefits the WRs now but wouldn't it just flip to DBs?

You honestly can't tell me more DBs wouldn't just grab and hold on for dear life to save a TD and only get hit with 15 yards?

They need to get rid of the automatic 1st down on the 5 yard illegal contact penalty.

I think the game would survive giving the defense atleast one rule advantage over the offense in today's NFL

This likely complicates things but, I say they keep it as a spot foul up until a certain point. Meaning, the spot foul can only benefit a team a certain amount of yardage. Like 40 yards. So basically, the normal spot foul rule applies but is capped at a gain of 40 yards. This keeps the spot foul but doesn't result in one penalty moving someone from their own 30 to the opponents' goal line.
