For those that coach, and those that just like/know the game....

To get this out of the way, we all know it's way more about how you teach it to your team rather than what you teach them, because every system works if run effectively, so we don't need to debate that.

My question is: Assuming you have an equal amount of talent and ability at every position and skill, what kind of offense do you want your team to run?

I feel like at the end of the day you want to get players in the easiest situations to be successful as possible. I would run a lot of off the ball screens and screen the screener type of offense. My philosophy would be to have everyone moving for a purpose to create space for the drive or the Iso in the post. What we would work most on is decision making and execution once my players got into the favorable situations (when to shoot, when to pass, where to pass, where to be if your teammate drives, ect...)

Basically like a dribble drive offense but with a lot more structure, unless my players could prove they don't need the structure or its holding them back

I know we aren't talking defense in this thread, but you better have a shite load of tall super long and athletic guys or you are going to get torched if this is your base offense.
1-3-1 can be great when used correctly, but it's also easy to figure out through a whole game (or even a whole quarter) there is ALWAYS a hole to exploit

Hey the 1-3-1 can be a great defense if used at the right times, just can't be your set offense at any level higher than middle school if you want to beat a disciplined team

I've always liked the Princeton offense myself but you obviously have to have at least one strong post guy and some guards who can shoot from behind the arc when they pack it in on you. I like the constant motion and the backdoor pass though.

Defensively give me man all day.

I have coached for about 8 years ages being 11-12. I ran a couple different offenses depending on the kids.

With an average team, I would just run a motion with screen and a lot of ball movement having them pass usually 4-5 times until they shot.

If the kids could run it, I would run the Princeton offense. That only worked with two teams and I made it simple as possible

One year, I had a lot of athletes and speedy guys so I ran a run and shoot offense. That was the most fun but the kids would take some wild shots. I also had to devout a lot more time to defense.

I prefer some kind of motion to slow down the game and give the kids the best shot available.

play 10 guys. press all over the floor.

they all know how to pass. they will learn because they will play 4 vs 6 and learn to move the ball against the 6 pressing them without dribbling into trouble.

Half court.
They all learn how to hit a jump hook in the lane.
No one stops moving without the ball or they are taken off the floor.
they know how to create arcs to make moving the ball possible against man to man.
They actually run plays in half court. The front line are all in position to rebound when the ball is going up.

They learn to how to shoot free throws.
If a big man is not 70%, he must learn the Rick Barry (and prior) underhand method, Rick Barry claims everyone can hit 85% with it. Seems like an exaggeration, but there will be no Shaq/Wilt guys who are unable to shoot free throws.

The team can play 1-3-1 zone D & they practice 3 point shooting against it.

They know how to shoot a reverse layup and use the rim to protect the shot. If they try a dunk and miss, they sit the rest of the game out.

They actually practice bounce passes. I saw LeBron do a couple of beauties the other day, HARD bounce passes as interior passing to big men. Works of art.

sometimes I would choose some of the starters from games of Horse in which all the shots had to be 7 to 12 foot jumpers off the glass.

Theoretically a perfectly run man has no holes, but yes you could. The hole in the 1-3-1 is just easy to find, in fact I know of a very easy to teach offense that if run correctly makes it impossible to guard everyone in a 1-3-1 zone.

Of course you can adjust your zone, but there will still be a gap. At the end of the day, if you get the ball in the middle vs a 1-3-1 the zone is crushed and you have to scramble

Obviously everyone wants this team, that isn't an offensive philosophy it's a perfect world. It usually takes years to build a team like that but it can be done

Swing offense.

Produces mismatches if guards have the ability to play in the post and big men can stretch the defense.
