Mars One has narrowed down the list of candidates to 100 people.

LINK
50 men and 50 women left out of the 200K initial applicants who applied to be te first people to go to Mars. 30 of them are American, and theoretically 4 of them will be the first people to set foot on Mars.
Honestly, I think you'd have to be nuts to partake in this, and I really hope the candidates are better than I saw from some of the previous 600 candidates: LINK. The first guy is a joke and the absolute antithesis of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. A guy who has never kissed a girl and jacks off simply to alleviate the chances prostate cancer would be a horrible choice to first stand on Mars. The woman on the other hand seems like a total sociopath who would likely turn Mars One into the Overlook Hotel. The black guy is the only passable person on that presentation and I would like to see a guy like that step foot on Mars. But hopefully we can do a bit better than him, just someone with the same ambitious spirit.
So if this ever got close to getting off the ground, what would you think of one of these 100 people stepping foot on Mars? All of their profiles are up and you can review them. I'm surprised to find multiple married people who have signed up for a one way trip to Mars, and I think this would be a great experiment for mankind.

Anyone that steps foot on Mars is a hero. I don't care if he jacks on his own face.
Everything we know now was discovered or invented by some weirdo that didn't fit into societal constraints. You should feel blessed that you have the freedom to comment on their flaws.

Would I be too much of a wet blanket by asking how much funding they've allocated to any of this?

I think they're just looking for eccentric people, because naturally, you would have to be eccentric to want to go to Mars and never come back. I think I'd rather stay on earth than spend the rest of my life with 3 other weirdos. Take Cody, 22, for example:

And yes I was hanging upside down for most of my application video.

Just perusing through the profiles, you run into a lot of people that would be really good role players. Lots of educated, adventurous types with the right professional backgrounds. I saw very few, if any, real leaders in that group, though. You need people who can make difficult decisions under extreme circumstances that affect a lot of people in there, and I don't see much of that.

No offense, but I want to have some confidence in a person as an individual and not as a sideshow. Sorry, I can't say I trust any man who sees only the technicalities of sexual gratification. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the type of guys you'd be proud to know well before they went to the Moon, and we need someone of actual competence to do it. I've watched about 15 of the videos on the finalists, and I see some of this in them. We should be careful on who the first 4 people that step foot on Mars are as individuals as much as their core competences, since those 4 people will be remembered for all time. I'm not saying don't give the awkward virgin a shot (I'd say no completely to the sociopath though), but just make him the third or fourth trip to Mars, not the first.

Maybe put him there in Season 2, but for the first four, no.

We used to use monkeys against their will. We can't do that anymore because it's unpopular. I don't care if we send a few mouth breathers on a one way trip if they volunteer. I want to keep the smart people here with me.
