I know the man's man drink of choice is bourbon, but I honestly abhor the stuff. It makes me insta-pukey. My early college days were filled with whiskey, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Me drinking bourbon:

That being said, does anyone else prefer a good rum? I recently discovered Papa's Pilar and I drink it neat, it takes like a slightly boozy caramel.

Description:
quote:

Papa’s Pilar Dark Rum has a strong aroma of brown sugar and cinnamon: sweet, dark, and rich. The flavor is sweet initially, with lots of vanilla, caramel, and citrus. Then the spice starts to come on, cinnamon and anise, balancing it out. It finishes on the dry side, medium-long, and slightly astringent, with the influence of the sherry aging making itself known.

False. I go to a Whiskey bar once a week with some friends and have sampled some (supposedly) great Kentucky Bourbons, Japanese Whiskeys/Bourbons, Rye's, etc.

To each his own I suppose.

Get a bottle of Jefferson Reserve Bourbon. It is about the most mellow bourbon out there.

If you don't like that, then you don't like bourbon. Cheap (traditional college) bourbon is terrible.

I'll see if the place I go carries it. They have about 300 different types, normally, so I'm sure they do.

Then don't drink it. It's like Justin Wilson used to say "Drink the kind of wine you like." I hate white wine. So, if I'm at a restaurant having fish and they suggest white, I order red. I just don't like white wine.

If you don't like bourbon, don't drink it. As far as 'the man's drink' hell, the woman's drink is supposed to be 'gin.' I like a gin martini.

Well, I used to hate beer when I was 18 and now I love the stuff. I am sort of hoping it's an acquired taste.

I thought the woman´s drink was vodka...

Anyway, OP, there are a lot of good rums out there (I personally cannot drink it neat, but know some serious connoiseurs).

For years I searched for a great sipping drink, but I was never a fan of liquor even in my college days. Tried rums, scotches, bourbons, etc. and bailed on all of them after one sip. Then I discovered Wild Turkey American Honey. Damn, I love that stuff. It is so freaking smooth and tastes great. Some may call it girlie, but it is 71 proof. I've tried other honey brands like Jack, Evan Williams, Bushmills, etc., but none of them can touch Wild Turkey in terms of smoothness. And if you're at a party and want something to drink all night long without getting sick (or want something the ladies can drink ), you can mix it with Butterscotch Schnapps and it's like drinking candy.

I almost exclusively drink bourbon or rye.

However, there's a well known bar on the Redondo Beach Pier that serves a drink called a Fire Chief. Basically a Mai Tai with 151 and grenadine. It will knock you on your arse. It's the only thing I will drink rum in.

I've been on a cognac trip lately. Pierre Ferrand Amber and 1840 is great.

Does anyone ever think that some folks just like different things before posting this......I don't know why but no matter the post someone responds in similar fashion almost immediately.

I like rum. I love bourbon.

Rum and diet coke is my go to. I really don't care if it is cheap rum either.

I think I lived off this stuff in college.

Or the albertson rum that was just labeled "RUM"

The Zacapa and Zaya are my go to rums without breaking the bank.

OP- I was in your boat not too long ago and took up drinking rum. Now, I love both.

The upside is top shelf rum is way cheaper than good bourbons and scotch.
