If so, how do you like it? Good benefits?
I may be setting up an interview shortly. The advertised pay is similar to what I make now, but I'm currently paying about $600/month health for me and my wife.

BCBS will run you about $204 biweekly, that is for family. Government is going to soon have a plan for Self +1. This should be less than the family plan which covers from 2 to however many kids you have.

I've met government I.T. guys and some were frustrated. Lack of funding, and government red tape makes it hard to get things done. I guess that goes with any government job though

That seems to fit most of the IT jobs I've had.

I suppose you're right I work at an ISP. Funding usually isn't an issue so long as the end is worth the means, but red tape definitely can be a hurdle.

How ambitious are you?
That will greatly determine your happiness level in government IT

What level of government?
It really depends on the agency and federal vs state vs county vs muni. Some are underfunded, some aren't. Some make IT a priority, while others are still 10 years behind. Some are highly centralized, which can handcuff you and some allow different divisions/locations to do thier own thing.
So, basically there's so much variance in government jobs/agencies that it's a crapshoot on whether or not you'll enjoy it.

This is true. It is annoying we can't just straight communicate with our IT. They just consolidated over to Dept of Admin. Makes everything slower than before when trying to get things done.

Guess it depends where you work. I haven't seen any change in response time on my request since they've consolidated. Now trying to figure how one agency/department is going to pay the services provided by the new one is interesting.

my old employer was a DoD/Army contractor so technically we were in the private sector but had to deal with a good bit of the "government" regulations/requirements/8570/DIACAP/red tape/etc..
I would not want to work for one of the 3 letter agencies...

I started off working for govt and I have done contracting with them.
Right out of college pay was competitive. With experiences, govt pay is considerably lower than private sector.
For me working in software, the govt was a decade behind the times. Staying with them would have made it harder to get a job later. In my time contracting, it seems most interesting new technology project have been outsourced to contractors.
The work environment at some of the government agencies I have worked for has been terrible. In several cases, people were just doing the minimum to get by and get paid.
The main positive was benefits. If I were near the end of career I would consider doing it just for the slow pace and benefits. As someone starting out and needing to be on top of his game, its not the place.

Hrmmm, good info. I'm on the fence about it even if they offer on the high end of their range.. I really need to get on with an oil company down here, but now isn't the time for that with all the layoffs going on.

That's most govt workers. No requirements to complete any tasks/projects.
It's a broad brush, but it fits most scenarios.
