What type of live music? Will the place have a family atmosphere both day and night?

Went for dinner and sat at the bar .. Food's OK .. Decent chicken & sausage gumbo and fried catfish .. Service left a lot to be desired by the bartender .. Not attentive at all ,.walked by empty beer glasses a number of times before finally having to flag him down .. A number of disgruntled customers at the bar waiting for service, looking around and shrugging .. This kind of defied usual bar service at other places ..

Menu looks a bit ambitious .. Hope the place sticks around and bartenders get training as to the proper way to address an empty beer glass ..

This concept and opening in this location reminded me of this article

I went there once to grab some lunch. Wanted boiled shrimp, they told me they didn't sell boiled seafood. So the name was just bullshite.

In their defense, the boiled stuff is "Coming Soon." You would know that if you stole a menu like I did.

Pretty spot on review.

They need to triple their service staff soon. And by soon I mean get it done last week. A "Seat Yourself" sign at a new restaurant? No one to greet customers at the door? No waitstaff in sight. Customers looking around, waiting to be acknowledged by someone, anyone.

A waitress or somebody came up and asked us if we needed a menu. You think? You think we might need a menu? Before I was able to enunciate the 's' at the end of my Yes reply, she was gone. There was no "Hello." There was no "Welcome to Boil and Roux." There was no "Can I get you something to drink." There was no "Can I tell you about our menu." There was no "I'll be back in sec."

So instead of dealing with guaranteed shite service for 45 minutes and then having to pay for the experience, we decided to head elsewhere to eat.

To the owner: the menu makes me ache. At first glance, it looks nice visually, but it's a difficult menu for a customer to peruse. If a menu is a salesman, your salesman is dressed nice, but he is awkward, a little annoying and his fly is unzipped. I just want to rip out that little fricking half page. When you redo your menu, and I know you will, make it taller and a bi-fold menu, with a left side and a right side. Nobody wants to be turning pages. I know you think it's a well designed menu, but in fact it's shite. And I wouldn't say that if I didn't think you could do better.

I will say that your place has promise. But you NEED someone to train your FOH staff. You need a LARGER FOH staff. Make this your TOP priority.

Guess I'll just stick with City Cafe for my raw oysters & boiled crawfish, and I'll make my own etouffee. I like mine the best anyway. I try and stay away from the fried stuff, but both Dempsey's & George's do a good job with fried catfish, shrimp & oysters when I do eat fried.

B&R may not have a clue right now, and will hopefully soon figure it out. When I start hearing better things on here, I'll go there. I'm still curious as to the type of live music they plan on bringing in and the type of crowd that will follow.

Gumbo thoughts for that area.

Portobello's has a very good chicken & sausage gumbo that's always on their menu. Much better than Dempsey's IMO. And the seafood gumbo at City Cafe is also a favorite of mine.

About half the menu had red boxes around it which said "Coming Soon" .. Huh ? Shrimp étouffée coming soon ? Boiled crawfish, shrimp, crabs, etc. Coming soon ? Like, when ? Who spends money having menus like that printed ??

The bartender was just waiting on a few tables around the bar. The problem was that he was just outright disappearing for long periods of time .. Like I said, the food seems decent, but i can't see that current staff executing that menu once all the "coming soon" items are online ..

Portobello's blows Dempsey's gumbo away .. It's probably the best kept secret in BR .. By the way, speaking of Potobello's .. I hear little Miss L is now "professionally" dancing on Bennington ..

Uncle O's gumbo's OK .. But not as good as advertised on here, IMO .. Heck, the B&R gumbo is probably better ..

I am always skeptical about restaurants that specialize in boiled seafood being able to attract a sizeable lunch crowd. The food is just too messy, and time consuming, for many working people. Have to hope there are enough other items on the menu of decent quality, and speedy service, to make it work as a lunch destination.

Well .. The boiled seafood is still showing as "coming soon" on the menu .. So there is none available in there right now, anyway .. They have all the typical apps, soups, gumbo, steaks, burgers, po boys, fried seafood, and fried chicken .. But if you want a beer, I recommend ordering 2 at a time ..

We went last night and overall ,my first impression was pretty good. At 6pm on a Tuesday it was pretty empty so service was not a problem, everything we ordered came out on time and getting drinks was not a problem.

On Tuesday grilled oysters are $1 each, we got a half dozen and they were excellent, bubbly hot, cheesy, buttery goodness. Next time we get a dozen each.

I ordered the fried crawfish salad, very nice. The crawfish tasted like they were made from crawfish boiled in seasoning, usually the fried crawfish are fried right out of the bag of tails. The salad was also full of bacon bits and other nice crunchies.

My SO had the broiled shrimp poboy, the shrimp were large and very good. The were not doused in Tony's, a disgusting shortcut a lot of restaurants take.

The beer was cold, my cocktail was perfect. The next trip I'll try some of the gumbo. I hope they continue to improve and can last a while. I understand another seafood place is going up on the other side of Sherwood.
