Respect for Soundgarden, but I'd take AIC in a landslide.
Dirt is my favorite album out of all the Seattle groups. Jar of Flies is awesome too. I even like Unplugged.

As a complete body of work, I'll take AIC.
That's not to say that Soundgarden didn't have some really great albums. Badmotorfinger is one of the very best of the 90s or any other era.

AIC Bette live, Soundgarden better in the studio.

I was a big Soundgarden fan in the Bad Motorfinger days, but AIC was always my band. I remember in the summer of 1990 in Florida. I read the lyrics to Man In The Box in Hit Parader magazine. I thought it was the shittiest thing I ever read. A week later I actually heard the song for the first time. I was blown away and headed immediately to the Record Bar (haha) at Cortana Mall to buy Facelift. It stayed in my tape deck for over a year non-stop. One of the most raw things I had ever heard. I went to Biloxi to watch them open for Van Hagar. Layne was so high he stayed in the same spot the whole show. Crouched down most of the time. SAP was brilliant and the even more stripped down. Dirt took a while to grow on me because it sounded a bit more polished but in the end the songwriting was there and the harmonies were so spot on. It was hard to tell sometimes where Cantrell ended and Lane began. Or vice-versa. Saw them open for Ozzy while Layne was healing from his broken foot. His voice was awesome because he was somewhat sober. Lollapalooza was somewhat of a disaster. Jar of Flies wasn't my favorite but did have its moments. The last record sounded halfway mailed in. You could tell things were unraveling. Mad Season was just a taste of what was never going to be again. Heroin was the force behind that band and ultimately it's demise.

Sound Garden pretty much established a whole genre

For me Soundgarden because outside of Dirt I was never that impressed with other AIC albums.
But to me Pearl Jam was a way more consistent band in terms of making complete albums than either of these two. Also Mike McCready is the best guitarist by far between Kim Thayal, Jerry Cantrell, and McCready.
But Cornell was the best lead singer, with Staley next and Vedder way behind them in terms of a great voice. Though Bedder is a great singer in his own right.
And just for the record, STP was badass, but they are from San Diego.

Agree.....never had a chance to see AIC with Layne live but I have seen SG; thought they were good but AIC with Layne had to be off the charts

I saw Soundgarden twice: Once at Lollapalooza (Metallica/RATM/Soundgarden/etc) and they were really good.
The first time was opening for GN'R in Biloxi in '92 when most people had never heard of them. They got boo'd off the stage.

AIC was better live before Layne got too screwed up to function.

Loved them both in the 90's, and at that time I was more of a Soundgarden fan. Used to play Superunknown and Badmotorfinger to death; however, since that time I find myself playing more AIC.
