For those too lazy to click the link:

The center of culture, drinking and music in Austin has become the thing of legends to outsiders. In reality, it’s a bunch of shot bars with shitty cover bands and DJ’s packed with frat daddies, thugs, skanks and amateurs.

It gets especially exciting between 1:30 and 3am! You can’t get a cab, you risk being towed (if you did drive there) and yes; that’s piss/vomit you are standing in. If you are really lucky chances are you’ll get brutally assaulted by a homeless drug addict, wanna-be gangsta, 21-year-old college bro who failed to pick up some pussy, Fort Hood reject or even the boys in blue.

New Orleans. Great place to spend a weekend, but it would be absolutely miserable living there.

agree with that, but it was everything and more i wanted in a vacation. i have zero desire to live there, but the food and culture/history was amazing. bourbon street was nasty and my wife and i avoided it for the most part, but the rest of the french quarter was really cool as was the plantation tour we took.

Basically the entire state of Texas sucks. Texas is more like Mexico than the USA. If you do not speak Spanish you are a miniority. Just have your passport ready when you cross into Texas.

2/10. Spend a weekend in the Hill Country you'll feel different.

Both Denver and Austin are overrated. Not that they are terrible cities, it's just people act like they are the end all be all of cities and rate them so extremely high.

I feel the same way when people mention San Diego all the time on this board....

i've never been to denver, but i get what you are saying with austin and san diego. however, san diego is generally brought up when people talk about great place to live, which it is due to weather, proximity to the beach, and some other factors. As a tourist, San Diego is really nothing special, which is why it could be thought of as overrated.

Regarding Austin, it was cool to visit, but it definitely didn't blow me away like new york or new orleans, and thats probably why people are saying its overrated. however, in defense of austin, it kind of reminded me of san diego minus the ocean, so i could imagine it being a great place to live.

It is pretty telling that Austin been mentioned a dozen times, yet no one actually backs it up with anything substantive.

i think its just that overtime the OT talks about the best cities, its always austin and san diego as the top 2. so people go with high hopes or something and then are left disappointed.

On this board - NOLA
I laugh when the posters on here espouse its greatness. Yes, the dining is fine. But, hell, there's more and better dining in Vegas. And the fact everyone mentions that the town smells like an open sewer system is not just a cliche. The only town I've been in that smelled worse than NOLA was Olongapo in the Philippines.

Austin:

- Overcrowded and overpriced
- Live music is subpar
- Austinites are elitist pricks who were generally raised wealthy but dress like Bohemians and go out of their way to do dumb shite then call it trendy and cool
- 6th street is packed on the weekends with thugs and deviants

Only decent place to hang out in Austin is Rainey St.

Huffington Post even rated Austin the #1 overrated travel destination:

Drum roll, please, for this legend in its own mind, a mildly entertaining university town and state capital with fever dreams of greatness, a city whose entire purpose for breathing is to not be like everything else around it. When you're trying to set yourself apart from a place as large and as bold as Texas, you have to work really, really hard. Which could explain why everyone walks around here looking so stressed. Sprawling Austin is one of those unfortunate places that seems really smashing on paper. And then one ruins things by going. You have now been advised.

overcrowded

It is a vibrant city with a lot to do...so yeah, there are going to be people around...that's ignoring all of the peaceful outdoors stuff and off-the-beaten-path locations the city is notorious for.

overpriced

What is?

quote:

live music is subpar

I will agree it is not as advertised, but it isn't subpar in terms of quality either.

People being themselves is stupid...everyone should shop at the GAP and act like their mom and dad. Get off my lawn.

Everyone knows a significant portion of 6th street sucks.

Also this is a really subjective topic. Everyone has different interest and things that make them happy.
