Austin does not suck.

1. Bbq from places like Franklin and la bbq is top notch
2. Lots of breweries with great tours and taprooms
3. The east side is interesting
4. Trendy restaurant/bar scene but many are quality
5. Barton springs
6. ACL and good live music, both local and national. Not sure who thinks Nashville is better.

Overall it might it not blow you away at first glance but it's one of the best cities in the country.

It is pretty telling that Austin been mentioned a dozen times, yet no one actually backs it up with anything substantive.

Ok, I can list some things I did not like about Austin. I lived there for 4 years and I am very thankful that I left.

The traffic there is terrible. A 15 minute trip in the morning easily turns into a hour trip between 2-6 pm. Unbelievable that a city the size of Austin has one freaking interstate going through it. One! If you love long traffic jams for short trips then Austin is the city for you.

I saw more bums and homeless people in Austin than any other city I have been to (I have lived in New Orleans and Miami). They are literally at every stop light in a 5 miles radius around downtown. In downtown they are like ants crawling around there bugging and harassing you for money. When you park they will say they will watch your car for 5 dollars which leads you to believe if you don't pay "will you do something to my car"? The homeless are in the parking lots at: post offices, Wal-mart, HEB/Grocery stores, parking garages, and the mall.

Music is ok but nothing to brag about. Bars are ok but they close at 2 AM. They turn the lights on and tell everyone to get out even if the bar is packed. I was shocked. 6th street is a prime spot for homeless bums and thugs. Their is a smell of piss and vomit in the air. It stinks. I brought a date to 2nd street and we had a table outside. Once a good breeze picked up the smell of sewage was in the air.

Most places look like a circus freak show with all the weirdos, gays, and hippies trying so hard to really just fit in with each other. If you are normal then you are judged and disliked in Austin.

This is a very expensive city to live in. Probably one of the worst in the country if you want to actually live in the city close to everything. My friend from Chicago said that his rent in downtown Austin was more than downtown Chicago. My one bedroom apt downtown cost a arm and a leg. Very pricey for everything. Enjoy the suburbs which looks the same as every other surburb in this country.

Cedar and all kinds of crap in the air their. If you move to Austin and you do not have allergies you will develop them over time. Tons of people walking around with this ugly vomit orange shirts on all the time. Zero professional sports teams.

There is a couple

This is key right here. Austin didn't blow me away with one specific quality, but it had enough variation to keep me interested during my visit. Los Angeles(while a completely different city than austin) is similar in such that it doesn't blow you away with one thing, but it does offer a little of something for everyone. From a tourism standpoint, you generally want to visit someplace that has one standout quality; so for big city feel you go to NY, beaches you do hawaii or caribbean, outdoors would be Yellowstone, etc. From the standpoint of finding a place to settle down and live, people are generally looking for variety, which is where a place like austin, or LA, or san diego are more suited.

I would never really recommend anyone choose los angeles as a vacation destination, but as a place to live its pretty damn good. I think thats why LA gets so much hate here, people who have only visited are turned off by how nasty hollywood and downtown are, but those who have lived here appreciate the fact that the beach is only a 15-20 mile drive, mountain trails are abundant, and world class dining and entertainment is abundant.

Houston It really has nothing to offer outside of work.

Troof. Lived there for two years for work. Best job market of any city in the U.S., but otherwise, very meh.

Austin as well. Spent several weeks there in the past and went out to 6th street several times, lake Austin and lake Travis and had an ok time but that is about it. Very meh as well.

New Orleans...locals will try to pass off their crime and filth by calling it culture or something but the place is kind of a dump.

Fun place to party though. May be going in a couple of months to have a nice bender

Lol, probably never have ventured out of French Quarter. Enjoy your Atlanta suburb dweeb.

Houston is aight. The issue with saying Houston is that the premise of this thread is asking what cities are overrated. No one categorizes it with the likes of other major US cities. I have no idea where this 08 cat gets this idea that the food is so awful. The cuisine here is very good and very expansive, a reflection of the fact that it recently passed New York as the most diverse city in America.

Common of any major coastal city that doesn't essentially outlaw homelessness.

After reading people bash Nola's homeless problem from Houston people, I'm shocked at the homeless in Houston since moving

San Francisco.

I live in the area and I can vouch for how shitty it has gotten. just ridiculous. I moved to Oakland because it is a much higher quality of life. let that sink in.......

SF is a great place to visit, but there's no way I could live there.

I wouldn't say Austin sucks, but it was a disappointment. It was oversold IMO.

I have nothing to add about Austin, but I will say that is where a lot of people from SF are moving. of the hipster type......

I can definitely say that I believe that SF would be a great city if it were not filled with a hivemind of idiocy.

Yep, I average getting harassed more than once a day. That is one of the biggest gripes I have with Houston, along with the horrid streets inside the loop.

Any city worth a shite is going to be homeless, especially when it has a mild climate and wealthy citizens such as SF or anywhere in CA for that matter.
