Number 1 reason for a library is probably as a place for people to study and meet up on projects. Especially at universities where students live on campus and in dorms mostly.

Jindal wants to cut like $300 billion from the higher education budget. Spending that kind of money simply for aesthetic reasons is stupid.

The difference between a major renovation (I'm talking about completely changing the look of a building) and complete demo/rebuild is a shite ton of money. I think there's a good chance it could be fully funded by donors if the cost is under $50 mil. To demo a perfectly good structure to just turn around and build another, with a new foundation, is retarded.

There are still a TON of things not online. Especially for postgraduate course reading.

Yeah, when the remodeled the library at Ohio State they included a bunch of group study rooms that people reserve for project and such. They all have TVs to with hdmi and other cables to project your laptop for the group. Among other amenities.

All the articles and such are all available via the computer so people don't really use source materials from the actual library.

Tear that bitch down & restore the crucifix shape of inner campus. Move the library somewhere else, bomb Lockett & place it there, that area could be reconfigured to fit a library.

This is an older picture I found on LSU's Instagram from the early 50's. It's taken from the balcony of the Architecture Building looking north at Foster Hall. I'd love for the area to be open

Also, if you look closely, you can still see Middleton from Highland Rd. The library gives Memorial Tower a false appearance from afar.

LSU could replace Middleton with a small landmark that would represent LSU. We could incorporate into our university logo similar to UNC, UGA, & many others.

UNC

UGA

Libraries have existed for 3000 years. Books will exist long after the internet has come and gone. The library has always been the academic heart of a university. That's not going to change.

The Union doesn't work for this?

The Union doesn't have as many rooms to reserve for groups as Middleton does. There is also no computer lab for students in the Union anymore, while there is still the first floor lab in Middleton. The Union actually kind of sucks for the average student now, which is ironic considering the money that was just spent renovating it.

In reality, they need to move all of the fricking books down to the basement and up to the third floor, while bringing back all of the fricking computers they took out.

They should build a new library on the north side of Tiger Stadium. With the top floors having luxury suites with a view of the field, and a bunch of seats on the roof

It was placed in the middle of what used to be a Christian cross (from the air) to make what is now the quad.

No Starbucks on the first floor; no care.

Do you realize how many books are in the basement? LSU is a federal depository and virtually the entire basement, aside from a few administative offices and the bathrooms, is full of government documents/microforms. Where exactly do you propose putting books down there?

So what if the library had the traditional tan stucco walls and red tile roof? Would you still be disgusted?

Middleton is not in, or adjacent to, the old quad.

Well, that's the alternative to rebuilding elsewhere. Complete in-place renovation. Put in some arches on the ground floor, match the exterior to the rest of the quad, but in some faux tile rooflines (see new bookstore) and totally update the interior. It could work.

Don't feel bad. LSU is not alone. There must be something about libraries which demands that the architecture of the campus be ignored. My daughter goes to a school with one of the prettiest campuses in the country.

Typical campus architecture:
