My hunting partners get upset because I always shoot teal early and do not wait on the big ducks . What say the rant on teal early ?

Got to have at least 2 ducks besides mallards anyway. But I'm shooting until they are gone.

Well, exactly what do you define as a big duck?

I'd rather teal.

They are harder to hit and taste better to me.

Guide got on to me once in Hackberry for shooting a limit of teal in about 15 minutes. Said we should have waited on big duck. I told him ok we will shoot his limit in big ducks. Three hours latter we finally killed his limit. No way we would have killed two limits of big ducks.

I can't say I have ever been fortunate to have consistently good hunts where I could even question passing on a bird. I always take every bird no matter the species be it teal or Spoonie.

The perfect limit is 2 gray ducks and 4 green heads.

Back in the late1990s when duck hunting was much better, each morning my buddy and I had to decide whether to stop at 2 gray ducks apiece and wait on the mallards. Where I hunt in flooded timber, the gray ducks flew early and the mallards flew later.

So it was always a gamble. If it llook liked we would not get our mallard limit, then we would start shooting any gray ducks starting at about 11::00 a.m.

Now these days, especially this season, we will take anything at any time. Even Susies.

To me, what teal lack in size they make up for in taste, so I never wait when teal show up. If I see some dos gris in the middle of a good hunt I might pass but I've def been on tons of hunts where even dos gris are welcome birds.
