for those of you that post about drinking and enjoying lagers, I'm not really sure some of you know what that means.

quote:

Lagers are bottom fermenters. They take much longer to ferment, anywhere from one to three months, and ferment at a much colder temperature than ales. Lagern means "to store" in German. Lagers will have a cleaner taste and appearance. Lagers also are less hoppy, maltier and have a lighter body than ales. Lagers were invented by Bavarian Monks about 500 years ago when they found they could produce a clearer brew by storing it during the summer in wooden casks in cold subterranean caves.

some examples of lagers include:
•Traditional German Bock
•Doppelbock
•Eisbock
•Munich Dunkel
•Schwartzbier
•Classic German Pilsener
•Classic American Pilsener
•Bohemian Pilsener
•American Lite Lager
•American Standard
•American Dry
•American Cream Ale
•American Dark
•Vienna
•Oktoberfest/Marzen

Boom.

And I'd bet a lot of the people OP is talking about are drinking light beers when saying that.

Clown Shoes Swagger was a good red lager.
Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug was pretty tasty as well.

Ales are way more popular to tinker with, but lagers can be pretty tasty also.

Sometimes I wonder if monks were geniuses, ahead of thier time, or just really bored,

I bet there was just one that the rest of them didn't like. He was the obnoxious drunk. So they tried to hide their beer from him while he was in town visiting.

Ales are easier for homebrewers because of temperature control and yeast issues.

I would think lagers are just as easy as ales for commercial brewers with glycol jacked conical fermenters and huge packages of yeast direct from Wyeast/White Labs.

In my mind the biggest difference for a commercial brewer is the amount of time a lager ties up equipment. You can turn around an ale in a couple week. A lager probably sits in a conical for two weeks minimum and then sits in a keg/bright tank lagering for another month or so afterward.

You say this,

then don't provide any reason why you would think that. I mean, is this just a generic lager thread? it makes no sense.

Like I said in the original post, it's because I've seen several people on this board say "I like drinking lagers". a Lager isn't a particular style of beer, it's a type of beer that encompassed many styles

To me, it would be the same thing if someone posted the question "What's your favorite cut of meat?" and you answered "pork"
