The measure was approved by committee and now goes to the full Council. Existing cigar bars and tobacco stores will be "grandfathered" in and continue to operate.

I know the measure is unpopular with some posters, but I suspect the consequences will not be nearly as dire as predicted by opponents. That seems to be the case in other cities that have taken the step.

Bar owners I know have seen this coming for awhile now and have pretty much accepted it.

Terrible.

I'm not a smoker and if I don't want to go to a smoky place, I find another. Too many damn options. Government should have no say in this matter.

This is great news. Cigs and their noxious odor have no place around food.

Will bars and restaurants be able to have smoking sections outside?

I agree. I love that BR went to non-smoking, but still don't think it should be govt regulated. It should be the choice of the business owner and whether or not he thinks his clientele wants it.

In the past, the problem was that a smoking section would literally just be a designated area. Didn't need a wall or a door, so if you were anywhere in the vicinity of the "smoking section" it became your problem as well.

I'm really not for more government regulation, but this will be a net positive for my life.

Does cigarette smoke really add to a bar's atmosphere?

I think so, although it'll depend upon how they word it. There is a provision about smoking within a certain distance of a pace. But I have to believe it will allow a patio or something similar for smoking.

Whew. Thank God that we have mommies and daddies in the local government to dictate how their poor, incompetent children (read as: privately-owned businesses) should properly run their bars and restaurants.

Liberal do-gooders eventually ruin everything they attempt to "fix."

With Dave & Buster's coming to Poydras, NYC transplants arguing for Nola to outlaw existing open container laws, and yuppies trying to restrict the hours musicians can play music on public streets - the Disneyfication of New Orleans will soon be complete. Just waiting on the final shoe to drop.

I love seeing the smokers whine as more and more places squeeze them out. They sure are a vocal minority.

This. If a bar wants to allow smoking, let it be. If a bar doesn't want to allow smoking, let that be. Let it be up to the individual bar owner to decide and let the market decide. Smokers will patronize smoking bars and non-smokers will patronize what they will.

Casino revenue would drop 20 percent over two years if the ban is enacted, said Matt Wellman, vice president of the Amusement and Music Operators Association, a trade group that represents coin-operated amusement game and video poker operators. He cited a recently released study by the Louisiana State Police.

“You may not care about that. But you may care that a large portion of that revenue goes to the District Attorney’s Office. And are we really in a position to start cutting the criminal justice system employees in Orleans Parish at this point?” Wellman asked. “If you want to be realistic and honest with the public, this smoking ban should have a tax increase as a part of it, because you’ll have to make up for the lost revenue somehow.”

Preach on.

Also, havent looked into but if this ban ultimately exempts Harrah's from the ban, as I suspect it will, it really tells you everything you need to know about so called protection of employees.*
