I've seen this tossed around a lot today in these threads.

"The SBEII kicks harder than the Xtrema"

"The Xtrema kicks harder than the Maxus"

I know I'm not a small fella but Ive shot all the auto loaders, from mossberg, stoeger, franchi, Winchester, remington, browning, benelli, and beretta and can't tell the difference in recoil. I'll go even further and say that the only two I didn't care for was the mossberg and remington, but they didn't kick anymore than the other ones.

Who can feel the difference?

I'm not small either and I can tell the difference in a gas gun and an inertia gun (assuming I have had a good hunt - especially on high limit hunts like doves).

I can feel the difference between my Beretta AL 390 and my A400. The bruises on my shoulder are proof. The Al 390 has much more recoil. My grandfather's 1100 kicks like a mule. I hate shooting that bitch.

I have shot my Xtrema next to my buddies SBE and we both agreed the SBE kicked harder.

I couldn't have been on a better dove hunt back in September in Texas. Three of us, each different shotguns. A beretta 390, a new Unico, and my SBEII. The last day we all took turns with each gun shooting at nothing as to feel the recoil. After 3 days of high volume shooting all three of us couldn't tell the difference.

I can't tell. There is a difference in a pump or single action and an auto loading, and 3.5" vs 3" or 2-3/4", but not between brands. The only time I've noticed is when one has a hard butt pad versus a soft one.

I've never felt recoil from any gun when shooting at a bird.

My old Belgian Auto-5 is the softest shooting auto I've ever shot. (If the friction rings are set correctly) Other than that, I've shot a lot of gas operated guns and can't really tell a difference between them. My Buddy's Vinci kicks like a mule to me. It's the only Inertia gun I've ever shot.

Exactly my point, there is no "felt" recoil difference between auto loaders.

Does anyone know if there is some sort of device and if there has been a study on the actual force felt by these shotguns?

Should be easy with an accelerometer and a stand built to accommodate. I don't know of anytbingn already built but it would be an awesome college engineering project

I was always told these were soft shooters. No personal experience.

I'll call the engineering dept at LSU and tell them to get on it.

Pretty good article. Gun weight, shot weight, and muzzle velocity. The rest is pretty much inconsequential.

That link says I have to buy that article.

Here's one comparing information from the manufacturers.

They all claim they are the lightest kicking with some arbitrary graphing of recoil.

I will say that my old Browning Gold hunter in 3.5 inch has considerable more recoil than either my SBE2 or Super Vinci.

Despite being 1.5-2lbs lighter the comfortech stock on the Benellis make a world of difference.

At least to me they do.

Do you think those Benelli stock insert dooma flotchies help?

No, but they look cool.

according to Benelli's arbitrary graph they help.

This.

I have felt it later in the day if I shot too many 3 1/2" shells though.

I currently shoot an SBEII and before that shot an 1100, SP-10, and then 1187. The gas guns IMO are far less felt recoil than the SBEII and that's not shooting 3.5".

After hunting 3-4 days in a row shooting magnum loads I feel my SBE II a lot, I never had that problem with the 1187. Doesn't stop me from shooting it though, I shoot the SBEII better than any other gun I have ever shot.

I've shot a 1950's vintage Model 58 and there's quite a bit of difference in felt recoil compared to my A400 even with just the target loads I used. And yes, there are studies on recoil forces using calibrated testing equipment.
