Overall, are we on pace for the worst ever bowl attendance ever?

I know that traditionally some games have lousy attendance, but even the bigger bowl games are having large empty sections. Which begs the question why these venues maintain these ridiculously high face value tickets which often deter people from making long travels.
What is the best that can be done?
Sorry if Germans.

All I'm saying is that when the playoff moves to 8 teams, there better be higher seeded home games in at least the first round. Otherwise there won't even be fans in the stands for the championship games, it'll be rich people and locals who will ruin the atmosphere of the games.

Bowl games are frickin' stupid, get rid of the cupcakes and add more teams to a playoff or more meaningful regular season games.
It's absolutely criminal that teams like TCU and Baylor didn't play top OOC foes during the regular season.

well, it costs a lot to attend these games. You have tickets prices, flights, hotels, taxi/car rentals, foods, drinks, entertainment.
It's better to say home and watch the games on your nice TV. When the game is over, just flip to the channel for the next game. Efficient, cost effective way of watching the games.

Texas high school title games outdrew like 75% of the bowl games

100% agree. Bowl games should be more geographically friendly for the teams. Outside of maybe Iowa and Minnesota wanting to travel to Florida because it is so damn cold up North, families just can't afford annual massive trips. Playoff home games would be awesome!!

Serious question. Outside of the like top 5/6 bowls, do bowl games make a profit?

I mean, the Orange Bowl between an ACC and SEC school was 1/2 empty the entire freaking game. What the hell was that?

Purpose of the bowl games is to benefit the sponsors, universities (both financially and recruiting), and the TV networks. Fan attendance seems to be the least of their concerns.
Also the playoff structure also makes the non-playoff bowls to seem more like consolation games (which I guess is what they are).

Maybe the introduction of the playoff has really brought into relief how irrelevant most of these stupid fricking 3rd tier bowl games are. I thought the team would get up for Notre Dame, though.

I think they actually do, with the exception of a few bottom feeders that pop in and out of existence.
There's an article floating around somewhere that, between committed sales to universities, sponsors, tax breaks, etc, a lot of the bowls are quite lucrative which is why we've got so many now.

These days bowls make about 2/3 of their money from tv contracts and sponsorship, only about 1/3 from ticket sales and concessions. The percent of revenue from ticket sales has been decreasing for years.
Basically most bowl games exist to give ESPN content.

Pretty much this. They don't really care about attendance.

The stadiums may be empty but that doesn't mean the schools playing in the games aren't forced to purchase a large amount of tickets.

Yep. I think some small schools have lost a ton of money because they had to buy like 20k tickets and couldn't sell them.

Many (most?) of the non-big-name bowls are owned outright by ESPN or a subsidiary. The only attendance that matters to them is the 15-20 guys behind the cameras.
As long as they can find a couple of 6-6 teams to play and a million people too lazy to change the channel, they're happy.
