just read story about the one they found wandering thru a neighborhood in Hawaii - cliffs notes - probably smuggled into island.

However, a couple interesting facts about this beast:

Can easily shred and devour coconuts

The largest terrestrial arthropods in the world, coconut crabs can grow as big as nine pounds and three feet wide, and they can live as long as 60 years. They've been known to shred trash cans, eat cats and tear up gardens.

they eat any rotting material that falls to the ground, including leaves, coconuts and carrion … if they’re looking for food, they’ll eat anything they can put their claws on.

coconut crabs are agile enough to climb trees.

coconut crab meat is tasty

Okay, I admit it, I'd never heard of coconut crabs and looked up some info.

You all might be interested in this part:

quote:

The pincers of the coconut crab are powerful enough to cause noticeable pain to a human; furthermore, the coconut crab will often keep its hold for extended periods of time.

Thomas Hale Streets reported a trick used by Micronesians of the Line Islands to get a coconut crab to loosen its grip: "It may be interesting to know that in such a dilemma a gentle titillation of the under soft parts of the body with any light material will cause the crab to loosen its hold."[34]

Dang, considering they eat anything, they should put them in Grand Isle and clean up the beach.
