re: Is hockey as violent as football?

Hockey is definitely a violent sport, but IMO is less violent than football. Football has collisions on every play, they are far less common in hockey.
Also, hockey is just a much less popular sport so it gets less coverage. In 2013, 46 of the 50 most-watches sporting events were NFL games and one was the college fb national championship. So only 3 of the top 50 were non-football, and zero were hockey. Even when you look at the top 50 non-NFL broadcasts, only one is NHL.

Never argue toughness and violence in a sport with a hockey fan. Personally, collisions in football appear to be more violent and occur more often. Kickoff returns are the worst IMO>

To be honest, they are so f'ing different that it is really hard to compare. The only position you can compare to hocke is that everyone is either a WR/TE or a CB/S. Looking through that prism and excluding fighting, I would say that Hockey is more violent, especially when you are sprinting down the ice to avoid an icing call.
Watch the Michael Del Zotto hit where he got a concussion or the Habs Geoffreon hit, or just go on youtube and google Scott Stevens as examples.
As far as getting hit though, I mean a LB/DL/OL is literally getting hit on every play. So that is different. In hockey when you look up stats you'll see 35-40 hits per game, so there are less collisions for sure, just that when they happen they are happening at such a high speed and force.

I love when non-hockey fans wake up and realize hockey exists and try to make salient points that are grossly misinformed. It's cute. To answer the questions.
Yes and no. But they don't have tackling and the real problem in football, the repeated stress of linemen bashing their heads into each other after every play.
Because you don't listen. There was this Eric Lindros guy who was sort of famous in the 1990s who had his career derailed by concussions. Hockey's most famous player right now, Sidney Crosby, has had a string of concussions. He even missed nearly a full season due to head injuries.
They already have.
I like when we look to a bunch of socialists for toughness. I mean, the NHL is full of Canadians, Scandanavians, and Russians.
But it's not that they are tougher (though hockey players are really f'n tough, a guy scored a game winning goal last week with his face smeared with his own blood because he lost part of his ear earlier in the game). It's that the NHL has actually been somewhat proactive regarding head injuries instead of just going the NFL "deny everything" tact.
Every head shot is reviewed by the league and suspensions are given by a designated office. They even release a video to explain their decisions. Repeat offenders get longer suspensions and there is a certain point at which you'll be banned from the league (though if Matt Cooke is still allowed to play, I don't think that will ever happen).
Also, fighting has been almost completely scrubbed from the game. There's still some holdouts, but the era of every team carrying a goon on the end of the bench has long since passed. the culture of the game changed, with the voluntary support of the players. Oh, and Scott Stevens retired, lowering head injuries by about 50%.

You forgot to footnote that the one exception to the no tackling problem is any game where Milan Lucic is involved.

The hardest hits in hockey can match the hardest hits in football, but they are much less frequent in hockey. There are hard hits on every single NFL play.

No they are harder

No. Hits in the NHL playing 82 games are far more frequent than NFL playing 16 games

To answer the questions:
If so, why don't we hear more about concussions/injuries? It's a major deal in Canada, talked about quite frequently. They are working on how to handle concussions at the minor league levels. Some of the strategies have involved changing the age of body contact to later ages as well as earlier ages (so kids learn how to take checks as a 5 year old)
How long until hockey players start filing lawsuits?
They already have. LINK
Is it because most hockey players are foreign and don't have a sense of entitlement that Americans have?
Don't think its an entitlement issue at all. Former NHL players were severely underpaid and it took a long time for them even to form a Union. Look up Ted Lindsay for more details.

Yeah, I played some rugby and high school football. Football is more violent bc the equipment allows it to be.
But obviously boxing /MMA are more violent

I watch hockey occasionally but I've never heard of hockey filing the lawsuits like we are seeing the the NFL, college, and even high school now. Lindros had a lot of concussions that is true but he is 1 player? Crosby would be the next major player I see dealing with concussion as Lemiux had cancer. Yet we are still looking at o ly 2 high profile (American) players over a 20 year period.
Espn doesn't cover it the same that is apparent since Barry Melrose doesn't seem to mention lawsuits on espn.

Barry Melrose is also an idiot.
The only person at ESPN worth a damn for hockey is John Buccigross, that guy does more for the game than anyone really truly knows outside the sport.
And not just the NHL, John does more for college and HS hockey than the NHL.
Bucci deserves his own hockey show.

Hockey players can't leave their skates, can't elbow to the head or go for the head at all.
It's been that way for a while. Anything high is a penalty, and you're gonna get your arse beat when you get back out on the ice.
This is why fighting is a part of the game. To reduce concussions.

Pretty much, they settle it like men.
Don't see many bad hits anymore, they've done a great job with it IMO. Exact opposite for the NFL.
