I know it doesn't get any good reviews from the board but I'm keeping an open mind about it (trust me i would rather cowbell) Friend lives around the corner and wants to try it. Any recs?

My first rec is bring about $30 bucks for just yourself.

Then don't be shocked if it comes out overcooked. Might as well just order it well done and be done with it.

Eat beforehand and have a beer with your friend?

I was at a party Friday that they were catering and I had the best $5 burger of my life. I've yet to have a bad meal there but I keep hearing the horror stories so I haven't been in a long time.

I've never been. Their arguing with reviewers on Yelp is completely offputting, though. I really don't get why business owners do this. Seems the best course of action for proprietors in these situations is to let it be and just work on getting good reviews instead. But what the hell do I know?

This thread isn't what I expected.

It's pretty mind boggling that an owner of a restaurant does not know better than to take to yelp to defend its restaurant. Seems like no good can come from that

I've been to charcoal once. It is a very cool space and the food was decent. The prices did not seem out of the ordinary compared to the other burger places in the area. I've come to expect paying for gourmet burgers from the company, cowbell, hi hats type places in the area.

I think charcoal is one of those places people love to hate. Though the yelp thing suggests they could bring some of it on themself

Not defending Charcoal here but you are going to pay a tax eating at most places on Magazine St. Look at the Jewish place across the street. That slob gets $13 for a pastrami sandwich and the place is a dump. Charcoal charges that much for an Elk burger yet they are overpriced.

I went once..didn't really care for my burger. Too dry, but I made the mistake of getting the wheat bun which added to the effect. Fries were good. I'd go again to try a different burger just to give it a chance.

+1

Everyone I know shite on the place about how overpriced it was and wasn't that good. I went once and had a solid meal and thought the prices were ok. People just went off on this place, and I've yet to see why.

Is this the place where they have nicer dining area upstairs and the even more casual area downstairs? If so, I went a few months ago and found it to be good for what it was. Nothing special, but the gf and I both had interesting hamburgers for a decent price.

Company Burger is expensive too but people say its worth it. To me not so much.

I'm all cowbell.

Ok besides the burger, are the fries good? Anything else I could make a meal out of (cheese fries, ect)

I would order one of their speciality burgers like the Elk with the tasso. Can't get that at the other burger places.

I haven't had a lot of "exotic" burgers, but I love a really fatty/juicy burger. I use brisket when I make them at home.

I wonder if all these weird meats would be too lean for my preferences

If it was good, I doubt as many people would have an issue with the prices.

The fact that the burgers are generally underseasoned, overcooked, and dry make their prices a bigger issue.

I've been a few times and always though they were sub par. The burger was over cooked and I think my meal was pretty expensive. If I were to get a decent burger uptown I would hit up Company Burger.
