I wonder what the defensive ranking would be if Thibs was the coach of the same players. I mean that as s genuine curiosity, not an automatic slight on Monty. Thibs does what he does with a lot of veteran players, this team is still pretty young and people regularly talk about how AD is still bad at rotations and Tyreke loses his man a lot and then there's Babbit and Ryno.

No way of knowing. The only thing that's certain is that Thibs would ruin AD by the time he's 26.

It means one or two of those guys are likely overrated defenders.

I think they are appropriately rated as individual defenders but all of these guys are still learning the defense. i see a lot of missed rotations. especially when the bench comes in. I'm sure that drags the rating down and the fact that Babbit is starting, anybody know what the D rating was when EG was starting?

I'm pretty sure it was top 10ish from what I remember seeing in nylon calculus retweets. Also curiously enough, the top 2 man unit on the team this year by a wide margin is Gordon and Asik at +14.7. The next closest is Ryno/Reke at +8.2 and then AD/Jrue at +7.9. LINK /

No he'd run him into the ground and nearly kill him, like he did Luol Deng.

I made this thread about a month ago...

They've actually gotten worse since then.

I went looking and couldnt find your threads about the defensive ratings of the Grizzlies and Mavs. Could you link them too? Id like to read them.

Well we saw it this summer. Granted competition wasn't NBA level, but Davis played with mostly average defenders. They were by far the best defense in the tournament and an USAB anomaly in that their defense, not their offense, won games.

I think you could convincingly argue the Pels have better defensive talent with Davis, Asik, and Holiday than any trio on the World Championship team.

veteran players,

Pelicans have 5, 6, 7 year vets in their core. How much older do they need to be?

This sort of double talk about the rebuild just kills me.

It's not double talk. Who outside of Holiday and Asik would you classify as a savvy defender?Would Thibs do better than Monty, no doubt in my mind. Is the group good enough to replicate the success level he's had in Chicago, I'm not as sure.

Then why are we having so much trouble?

Why would I make those threads? It's not surprising that the Mavs suck on D and the Grizzlies are good on D.

I do find it strange that the Pelicans' D isn't better... and apparently some of you feel the same way, seeing as the OP made a nearly identical thread to the thread I made weeks ago.

And we all agree, for three players (four if you include Gordon) to not have an average defensive rating is absurd. Sure more than half the games are against playoff caliber teams, but still is horrible to get worse and worse. At some point it's not the players but the coach.

Look at gs last year and this year, playoff caliber to championship caliber and their biggest addition was a better coach.

I don't find it odd that you didn't make those threads...
