16 teams gives everyone and their dog with a shot at the National Championship but eventually the money will drive it to that point. On the bright side the first weekend would be one of the best of the year.

Double Header Thursday and Friday night
4 games on Saturday

or

One Game Thursday and Friday
6 games on Saturday

Any way you set it up you could have 3 days of playoff football.

Would this hypothetical be the best sporting weekends of the year?

it would be great for CFB and would dwarf the Final Four in popularity -- think of the bracket talk

it might cost some current PTB a few dollars though, so it will be fought tooth and nnail

If they went to 16, we would have 8-4 and 9-3 teams whining about not making it in. That would just get annoying.

It would definitely diminish part of the regular season but I think it would also ramp up interest among casual sports fans.

I could see the Bowl games fighting against it tooth and nail. The TV execs would be all over it which means the power conferences would join as well.

Group of 5 would likely be the most shunned. They'd probably only get 1 or 2 teams tops in.

Would a team that lost 3 or 4 games really have anything to stand on while whining though? It would also make the bubble watch mean quite a bit during the stretch run plus more teams would be considered making for better TV.

Main issues I could see with it would be: 1) First round rematches 2) Site of the games

This year it would be:
1 Alabama (12-1)
16 Boise State (11-2)

2 Oregon (12-1)
15 Arizona State 15 (9-3)

3 Florida State 13-0
14 UCLA 9-3

4 Ohio State 12-1
13 Georgia 9-3

5 Baylor 11-1
12 Georgia Tech 10-3

6 TCU 11-1
11 Kansas State 9-3

7 Mississippi State 10-2
10 Arizona 10-3

8 Michigan State 10-2
9 Ole Miss 9-3

Which means there is a higher likelihood for conference rematches, so the committee would have to change the seeding dynamic a bit to try to avoid them

Seems like too many teams.

I wouldn't mind 6, but only if the top 2 seeds got byes. Let 3-6 playoff 2 weeks after the conference championships at the home of the 3 and 4 seeds. Then match-up the winners with seeds 1 & 2 starting Jan 1.

What happens when there isn't a clear cut 1 and 2, who gets the 2nd bye?

It would be bad to reward teams that much when they could easily have nearly the same resume.

8 teams max (and what I'd prefer). I'd be okay with 6 as well with the top 2 getting a bye.

What happens if there isn't a clear cut [insert any number]?

Regardless of the ranking mechanism, there should be a reward for finishing 1 and 2 if you are going to expand the playoffs by any more than 4 teams. I'm not really a fan of the playoff in general so I think it should be a huge reward for the teams that would have been slated for the national championship.

What a shite storm that selection process would be. 16 would be awful.

I'm fine with 4, but if they had to expand it, i wouldn't want to see more than 6.

i think what they should stop doing is updating the top 4 every week. if they would have just announced the final 4 after the regular season, there wouldn't be as much controversy

Yes they need to release one time and that's it. Run it like every other NCAA committee. But since it's not a NCAA committee and Disney wants ratings, it won't stop.

As for OP the best day of year is the Thursday of championship week.

16 is too many.

12 is the absolute most I can see. Even that's a bit much but at least there are two arguments for it. One is that every ranked conference champ would get in, and the other is that you could reward 1-8 with a home game and 1-4 with a bye.

Who gives a shite? It's more (quality) football that wouldn't otherwise happen.
