You can add a can of pineapple chunks in juice if you like them a little sweeter...

I've never understood the love for that dish. I guess I don't get it. I haven't seen it served in years, though.

Unfortunately, it has been more recent for me.

Someone brought it to work Thanksgiving.. and I think my dad's side of the family often has it at Christmas.

Usually meatballs in there too, but same sauce.

I love meatballs. Why don't they just make meatballs and a good marinara?

meatballs, chili sauce, grape jelly

I assume the same recipe could be used for the cocktail weenies

Cocktail weenies
Grape jelly
BBQ sauce
Crystal hot sauce

Put it all in the crock pot on high for about 3-4 hours, then just set it to warm

Some people laugh at these, but they always get eaten at parties.

I've seen more of them leftover than eaten. Probably why I haven't seen them at a shower or party in a long time.

A different take - better than Little Smokey wieners:

2 pounds pound of bulk country sausage (like Country Pride or Jimmy Dean) made into 3/4 or 1 inch balls and baked off in oven, or cooked in a sauté pan

Sauce:

3 cups of ketchup
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 teaspoons ground fresh ginger
1 teaspoon finely minced garlic

While sausage is cooking in oven, mix sauce ingredients in a small sauce pan. Put sausage balls into a small crock pot, or heated serving dish and cover with sauce. Simmer for an hour or two or four and then serve from crockpot or chafing dish with toothpicks.
