Georgia Southern, Sun Belt champions (8-0), appealed to play in a bowl game this season but were denied by the NCAA since it's their first year at the FBS level and...you know, just because.

quote:

Georgia Southern is classified as being in a transition season, moving up from the FCS last year to the FBS this season. Standard NCAA rules prohibit programs moving up a classification from playing in the postseason. It is not often a team playing its first year at the FBS reaches the six-win minimum for typical bowl eligibility. It is even more rare for a team to go undefeated in conference play to claim the outright conference championship in its first season. This is what Georgia Southern did this season, going 8-0 in conference play in the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt Conference recognizes Georgia Southern as the conference champion, but that is not enough to move the Eagles into the postseason.

NBC Sports.

GA Southern also played Georgia Tech within 42-38 earlier this season.

GA Southern AD on why they appealed the rule: "Our whole basis for the waiver is if you really study the bowl process, there's been waivers written for numerous things throughout time — for teams that had losing records, waivers when there's not enough bowl eligible teams and other things. So when you start to look at that and the uniqueness of what we've done in our transition by becoming conference champions, going undefeated in the conference, we made an appeal basically saying does the uniqueness of our situation warrant at least a discussion of this?"

What's the logic behind this rule?

I realize this is the NCAA we're talking about but there has to be some reason for it, right?

Wonder what's the policy behind this rule because it's not very apparent.

That's dickish but I knew that's what the NCAA was going to say.

The NCAA blocked former D2 power North Dakota St during the transition period from playing the FCS playoffs for no dam good reason either.

Regardless of whether or not the rule is "stupid", it was the rule before the season and Georgia Southern knew it going in.

Would be unfair to another team that qualified for a bowl per the rules but got left home

If they normally don't make it why make a rule keeping them out? They didn't take a big league roster and go play in a AA league, they did just the opposite.

A team isn't going to preemptively raise hell about something that *could* maybe happen in the future.

Something has to happen before this becomes an issue and then the rule will be challenged.

So now we have to watch a crappy team play instead of a quality team? Great!

If enough teams are eliminated, Michigan gets in! RATINGS!

I say this in jest, but just watch it happen.

The rule is to keep teams from jumping from division to division at will. Remember not all moves are to a higher division, some go down a grade.
I think they should have waivered them since they took a step up, not down.

I could see it if they were going down, but they went up. It is a bs rule.

The rule apparently only applies if you go up in divisions. So I wouldn't think it it would be designed to curtail division jumping if they are expected to do poorly in their first season after the jump anyway.
