My dog has a habit of chewing and destroying his bed while in the kennel. Is there a way to stop this?

Easiest response, and possibly the shallowest one, would be to say, don't put a bed in the kennel...Yes, thank you Capt Obvious.

Honestly it sounds like there is some anxiety issues while he's in the kennel. My chocolate lab would never crate/kennel train...so we quit trying. She would drool uncontrollably. It was disgusting.

All I can say is good luck.

Take the bed out. If the dog obeys kennel command then send it to the kennel, but leave the door open. Sit in front of it and pet the dog. Once your done petting, take it out. Repeat for a week or so. It sounds like it associates kennel with being punished. Kennel should be its sanctuary. The next week or so put it in the kennel, pet for a sec and just walk away. Eventually you can close the kennel with it inside and it probably won't go crazy. Hopefully this isn't a behavior the dogs done for a while. Harder to break the cycle if so.

mine used to do the same thing. i believe he was getting hot and just wanted to be on the plastic because he would start by almost digging a hole right in the middle of the bed then pull out all of the stuffing. now i just leave a pillow and a towel that he can move around the kennel if he wants and he hasn't chewed up either

I had worked early on with a K9 officer with our GSP - he also boarded and worked with her while we went on vacation - he told me early on that nothing should be in her kennel, especially anything with stuffing (toys, bed, etc.)as it could kill your dug if the ingest to much stuffing. As she got a older we introduced blankets and watched to make sure she wouldn't chew those, now we leave a flannel blanket in her kennel but nothing stuffed.

Obvious answer is obvious.

Real answer..not alot you can do. If this is a younger dog, it may grow out of this behavior as it gets older.

Mine did the same thing so I took the bed out and put in an old towel. Now he moves the towel to where he wants it and lays down.

Have you witnessed this behavior or are you getting the info secondhand? Does he do it when you're there or does girlfriend dog sit?

Well you could always take the bed away. The dog will be ok. Really.

The only thing a dog needs in his kennel is a chew toy that the dog really likes.
