Mono or braid and why

I have fished my entire life and used mono for most of it. I use braid only when bass fishing in heavy cover like pitching jigs. I lost a redfish today (prob about 18-20") on berkley big game 15lb test. Really pissed me off bc line was new. I have fished stren, berkley and others. I am thinking about totally switching to braid for all my fishing. I use shimano curados, and a revo. I'm concerned about castability and lack of any stretch with braid though. What do you guys fish with?

Nothing but braid for me and it suits my needs. 99% I'm fishing the marsh for reds so TIFWIW.

Strictly 30# power pro for me

Braid: for long casts, lack of stretch helps setting the hook
Small diameter, heavier lb test and more of it on a spool
Lasts a long time, if you don't break off it lasts years
Cons: abrasion and cut resistance, expensive
I really only use braid anymore, although i do back my reels with mono
As far as casting, I use braid when surf fishing and fishing behind spillways, i can cast 50lb powerpro 100+ yards easily, with only an 8' rod and 1 3/8 oz spoons

I use both. Where did the line break? I strip off about 10ft of my mono lines after a few trips. You'll start to pick up knicks and tears over time; that's why I like my braided.

I use braid but I'm not a fan of power pro. Check out Finns windtamer. Dicks sporting goods sells it. It is better against wind knots than power pro IMHO.

Power pro is good on spinning reels but Summit braid is best for me on baitcasters it's more round in shape then others. Get nothing less than 50# to prevent digging in. Nothing better for reds that braid . Good luck.

good point I would do the same but I'm basically only ever fishing out of a kayak in the marsh so I can pretty much get unsnagged every time.

Braid has a learning curve. Once you get past that curve it is pretty amazing. I still have issues with wind but Ive learned to "hand brake" my casts. The only time I really get knots is when casting and it gets hung in tree or marsh grass/reeds when Im not braking.... the inertia puts an extra few feet of line out there. As long as you see the knot and you dont synch the knot by reeling or pulling, it is fairly simple to get out. If you do synch the knot you will need to cut the knot out or use a knot removal tool like a marlin spike or hook. A lot of the fingernail line cutter tools have them.

I use flouro leader sometimes. Only reason its flouro is because I buy those tiny dental floss sized container that I can keep close by in the yak. It definitely helps if you like stretch in the line. I can not tell a difference in fish seeing the braid or anything like that.

I quit using PowerPro, and went back to the original Spider Wire a few years ago.
Anywhere between 35 & 50 lb. test works fine for me. I don't worry about getting hung up -- in the Basin the water's hardly ever deeper than the length of my casting rod.
