I am off today and get 8 hours of Holiday Time, but I have to work the rest of the weekend. I do get time and half tomorrow though.

Get over yourself. First responders and hospital workers don't have a choice, they still go to work on holidays.

How about you go start a thread about why we still have to work when there are hurricanes? Everything else is closed down and we have to stay at the hospital for at least 48 hours straight. We away from our families, but it's a part of the job we signed up for.

Never worked in a store but worked at a casino in college and now in a plant so always had to possibly work holidays. Its not that big of a deal. You know when you start working at the place that they are open on holidays. And I get 2.5x pay on holidays now so that helps

I think they should be close. Same for Christmas and Easter. It takes away as to why we have these days. And yes, I worked my fair share of all of them. Retired plant worker.

Well.... The same could also be said for hospital employees and police and firefighters and prison employees. They are always open for business, but you don't hear them going on talk shows whining about it. If the Mall employees don't want to work on Thanksgiving, then they need to get an office job.

IIRC movie theaters have always been open during major holidays like xmas, thanksgiving, etc too

Both sides are partially right. The stores do have every right to open and zero sum, lowest common denominator principles being what they are, once some started opening it was just a matter of time that most others would follow. Their fiscal well being, if not outright fiscal survival is at stake.

At the same time I do think it's pretty trashy that a lot of people think the best way to spend these holidays is traipsing through malls and such. But that is just the continuation of a trend that has seen the winter holidays in particular (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years) become more about buying stuff than about what they were originally about.

I feel like the OP was referring to a simpler time. Our idea of what we "need" has gotten ridiculous. You don't need for the stores to be open. I very much doubt that 50 years ago, anything was open on T-giving (aside from hospitals and such). 20 years ago we got along fine without a cell phone. Now they are attached to us. I think it's funny how we think we need shite that we really don't - like for the mall to be open on T-giving.

We don't "need" to be off every holiday or every Sunday for that matter. It's amazing how many people expect that shite. I wish somebody would show me how to get on those bill payment plans that will wait so you can have every Sunday and holiday off.

Weird how nobody have a damn about people working on the holidays before (cops, EMTs, plant operators, etc) but let a few retail workers have to show up for work and the whole country goes to shite over it.

Lot of people apparently don't see any difference at all between people like cops and hospital workers working and Wal Marks and Mall clerks.

Movie theater employees, some restaurant workers, grocery store personnel, plant workers, airline employees, hotel workers, etc etc have all worked holidays and no one gave a shite. No one still gives a shite about them, but God forbid walmart employees have to work Thanksgiving.

It's just a day BTW that someone just named Thanksgiving. If you really want to spend quality time with the family, do it the Sunday before or on Wednesday or the weekend after.
