My wife recently did the upgrade for the iPhone 6 and was charged $299 for the 64 gig phone. Keep in mind, it's on back order so she won't receive it for a few weeks. I get the first bill and it appears it is $100 more than our usual bill.

I call AT&T and they tell me that there is a one time fee of $40 to upgrade but our bill will now increase by $25 per phone due to a new acess charge and its $25 per line? He told me that all the phone companies are having to pay retail prices for smartphones and they have always hidden this cost in the past but are now passing it in to the customer to pay for the phone. Has anyone else seen this at AT&T? Do I need to switch?

I also told him that it seems like att is trying to get its customers to do this next plan where they pay for the phone on a monthly basis but in the long run, end up paying way more than the upgraded one time fee. He said yes, you can either space it out or have the upfront cost but you'll have the smartphone acess fees

Because of the $25 access fee, I upgrade with the Next plan. Its a business phone and I get reimbursed but still not happy.

My wife and I bought ours outright to avoid this. It worked out to $400 cheaper for us if we just bought the phone ourselves and went no contract.

You get a discount for not being under contract. It never makes sense to "upgrade" rather than buy the phone outright nowadays

Yep. It's the new norm. Subsidies are officially "gone". You pay full price for phone, get hit with an "upcharge", or finance with the next plan. Those are the options. Oh, and next plan kicks you off unlimited data. Great news, huh? Thankfully I don't pay for my phone or service anymore.

Att took one of my phones off unlimited without telling us. Said it says part of the new next plan even though we were told it would stay

Basically bitched on the phone for an hour and told them how sketchy they are then they got me back

So the best thing to do is go to apple and buy it outright? I tried to do this but the only option it gives me is t mobile with no contract???

No you don't

The 40 dollar per line access fee on contract lines all but negates any savings you would have by not paying full price for the phone

Just use the next plan

It's nothing but an interest free phone loan that will cost you nothing more than buying it outright

Lmao.. I bought a lg g3 for 380 in mint condition and pay 45 a month for 3gb of data with no worry of any overage. Plus if I get pissed off at the carrier I can bolt next month not to mention I use AT&T cell towers. Why do people ignore mvno's

People are crazy if they don't buy a phone and use cricket or straight talk.

ETA:

2 phones, 10 GB each of data, $100 a month.

Net 10, straight talk etc. carriers that you bring your own phone. No contract ride the cell towers of the large carriers.

I believe if your phone plan is less than 10gb, it's a money saver to get your iphone 6 on a 2-yr contract. However if your plan is 10gb or more, going on the Next plan will be your best route. There's pros and cons to each plan and it depends on how many devices you have on the plan.

The amount data shouldn't play a factor. It's simple math. If you are on the next plan, your rate for your line is $15/mo. If you are not on the next plan, your line costs you 40/mo. So you save $25/mo * 24 months along with not having activation fee.

I believe that's only for 10 GB or more of shared data

If you have less than 10, the line will be 25 a month I believe.

That's how it was a month ago at least.

Eta: now it's technically 15gb or more since they are doing 15 for the price of 10

I posted about this a month ago and people said I was crazy

AT&T told me themselves about the $40 fee. you were getting a $25 subsidy every month until you upgraded and now are paying the full $40 per line. im about to upgrade so basically my wife and i's bill is going to go up $50 a month

Which MVNOs work well in BR, or I guess which use the ATT and Verizon backbones?
