I keep hearing all these people say what a shame it is that the poor Wal Mart, Best Buy etc workers can't be with their families on Thanksgiving b/c of the stores opening earlier and earlier. I had one coworker basically call me an a-hole b/c I have no sympathy for them.
I asked him where he was when hotel workers, plant workers, restaurant workers, non essential medical workers(lab techs, accessioners, couriers), bus drivers, pilots, flight attendants, etc, etc etc have had to work holidays forever?
I got silence, but God forbid the wal mart employee have to work a day they were told they would be working when they were hired. Am I wrong for thinking that if you don't want to work holidays then maybe find a job that doesn't require you to do so?

That's what I figured. I can be an a-hole, but I don't think this is one of those cases.

My Dad worked every Thanksgiving Day because he was a fireman and he got paid 2.5x overtime for 24 hours that day.

We would always have Thanksgiving on the Friday after.

Tons of these stores have not historically been open on Thanksgiving day. So your statement that certain employees are told they would have to work this day when they are hired is just plain wrong in a lot of cases.

Must be a nice Utopian world you live in where people have access to any job they want in any industry at any time.

Actually, I'm the complete opposite. But I'm not a dumb shite either.

I always work holidays. If I wanted off for holidays I would have gotten a job in a place NOT open 24/7. So no sympathy for them.

When I worked in college, I was always working on Thanksgiving.

A lot of restaurants are actually open then.

I'm confused. Why am I supposed to feel sorry for these people?

Nope. No sympathy. But, I hate Black Friday in general. People trampling each other for the cheap gadget one day after giving thanks for what they have is pretty awful. But, that's why I hate it. Not the poor workers. Plenty of people have to work holidays. It's just the latest outrage bandwagon. People love to feign outrage.

I feel sorry for them because Black Friday sucks, and I wouldn't wish an experience like Black Friday on any employee.

I feel as bad for them as I do for people who complain they don't make enough money for flipping burgers at McDonalds, which is not at all.

Lol, I am in medical sales so I'm off, but if I was a plant operator, I wouldn't be complaining.
I don't do Black Friday other than Amazon online mainly b/c I hate the crazy crowds and b/c I don't need to fight for a piece of plastic junk thats "on sale"

I worked in retail in college part time so I worked very weekend. It sucked. My first three years out of LSU I worked offshore. Offshore is 24/7, 365 days a year. It never shuts down.

So I guess I am not sympathetic.

Worked retail in college and I always volunteered to work the holidays. I'd rather the overtime pay over spending time with people I don't care about any day.
