what are the expectations for this season? Do you see us making the NCAA Tourney? Following the signing of Ben Simmons this basketball program seems to really be gaining steam getting highly touted recruits again.

yay basketball thread!

Pretty normal expectations are 3rd-5th in the SEC and a tournament birth.

They will be really fun to watch this year. Great mix of athleticism and size.

Wouldn't mind revisiting that previous year's signing class.

Who is going to have the biggest impact early?

Well Gray and Hornsby are junior transfers, and both will start. Elbert Robinson will also start at center, but he may not get the total minutes. Still should be most from a freshman.

Epps has impressed coach Jones at practice and Patterson played very well in the exhibition last weekend.

I literally cannot wait for basketball season. Next Tuesday will be absolutely amazing. Best thing ESPN does all year is the tipoff marathon

Baby steps first. They will be a solid NIT team this season. Next year will be the big dance invite. Hopefully JJ will be able to keep the momentum going.

Reay excited about this season. The whole profile of the SEC should be higher this year meaning that more SEC teams should be in contention for NCAA bids.

If LSU doesn't make the tourney this year, severe pressure will be on JJ. People thought last year had potential to be a tourney team, and we've upgraded both guard spots and 2 of our best players came back. We got to the NIT last year and won a road game, I want tourney badddddddddddd

As much as I hate Bill Walton on games, I really hope we get him for at least one and that Hornsby just goes off that game.

LSU should make the tourny this year, they have the talent.

Haven't really looked but guessing most are thinking after UK and UF its a mix of Arkansas/LSU/UGA for those 3-5 spots?

SOS, I have a question about Simmons and figured it didn't need its own thread.

I have watched his highlights, and a majority of them are him getting in the paint/to the basket and finishing there. He also appears to be very athletic and seems to handle the ball very well for someone his size. My question is, can he shoot from the outside? How will we use him? Do you think he is most dangerous getting the ball on the wing where he can shoot or drive, or do you think he is more effective inside? TIA.

I tend to agree. This is pretty much the exact type of roster that he likes to work with and they're all his players. This year will tell us a lot.

I thought last year's team's ceiling was sneaking in as a high seed in the NCAA tourney and we were likely an NIT/bubble team. Not to say I wasn't disappointed with a number of games that we had no business losing. But as you said, this team has major upgrades at guard and our 2 best overall players returning (Jarrell is poised for an eye-opening season IMHO). I like what this team has the chance to bring and will be disappointed with anything short of an NCAA bid.

Presumably Patterson & Quarterman, are the back court bench, would Epps be the front court help, what's expected of Malone & Odo?

Epps has been practicing at the 3. I'd expect him to play similar to Martin going in at 3/4.

I'm worried about Odo and Malone. I could see Jones just dropping Martin and Mickey down a spot when Robinson needs a break.

That's pretty much it. Most are picking Arkansas ahead of us. Probably because they don't really lose at home. I think LSU has them beat on talent, but just barely.
