Get a fresh ham, not cured or cooked, fresh green ham.

Cut one side out of two large brown paper grocery bags.

Place the ham in a large sided pan, then place the open grocery bags on the ham like you are covering it.

275 for about 12-14 hours.

Best ham Ive ever had.

Where does one get a "green" ham in Baton Rouge?

Honey baked from the fancy store then use the bone for white beans.

isn't a fresh ham just a pork roast?

One time at thanksgiving my sister asked where hams lived bc she had never seen one; in the wild or at a zoo.

Usually you can find them in large grocery stores. Cooks and smithfield both make "fresh hams".

Using a smoked or old fashioned baked ham, I use Tom Fitzmorris's root beer glazed ham recipe quite often. I double the sauce, though, because it right tasty. I'm not a big ham lover, but I do like this recipe.

Score the ham, cross hatch fashoin, in 1 inch markings @ 1/3 in an inch deep. Stud it with cloves. Rour a few cups of coca cola over it, cover and bake to temp. Pull the top, crank the oven to $25 and cook 10 more minutes for color. If you want to get kinky, pour in a cup of orange juice...baste a few times during the cook.

A good root beer is better. I tired of the old coke version my Mom used to make all the time with that sort of rectangular looking ham when were little.

GG I have to make that every Holliday. My wifes family loves it. Im getting tired of it.

When I was a kid my Pawpaw use to serve us boiled ham. Basically a smoked ham boiled in water with brown sugar. It was simple but good.

Look up Fitz's recipe also, Otis. Sauce has some good stuff in it.

Do you use a Mexican coke on yours since the regular coke is no longer?

I poured a few Cokes over one a week ago, but I didn't check their passports. Will do next time.

I made it every NY Day for years, but I got tired of ham, though my people didn't. Last year, I did a few bone in pork loins and they were delicious. Not sure about this year. The ham is really easier with all the other things I have to make. I eat it once, though. Then, I'm done. No leftovers for me, though it would be great fried in slices. The people who love ham love that preparation.

Otis, I'd bet the Mexican real sugar cokes would change that ham up. A real sugar root beer will, as well.

I like to have it handy for beans or jambalaya...otherwise, this first meal is often enough. But a ham bone and the secondary uses are good reasons to keep one around. Been hacking at a whole country ham for the last week.

Once it has something sweet on it, I won't use it for any dishes. I'll use the bone, but nothing else.

I'll buy a good smoked ham, though, and cut it up for seasoning, frozen in vac seal bags. I've done that quite often. I buy a lot of smoked shanks, also.
