duck calling - blowing a whistle

i'm trying to improve my duck calling, and i'd like to learn how to properly use a whistle. i have one of the 6-in-1 whistles. so a couple of questions:
-do you call at different times with a whistle than with a standard mallard hen call?
-is there a call you can make with a whistle that functionally does the same thing as a hail call? i like it as a 'confidence' call, but can i use it to get ducks attention that are a long ways away? none of the whistles are very loud.
-are any of the various calls you can make better than the others? i find the pintail pretty hard to do so i'm not super inclined to practice that one, but is it any more effective than, say, a widgeon call, or a mallard drake?

I use mine mainly in conjunction with another caller. If someone else is calling with a mallard hen call, I'll throw in a few greenhead notes. I hunt almost exclusively in timber so I don't use the pintail a lot unless we have some working. Same for tael and wigeons

I'm pretty terrible with a duck call so I primarily use a whistle when I am hunting by myself and actually find that I get better results with the rolling whistle like a mottled duck will do (especially late in the season)

I've had really good results with a mallard drake call, pintail, and wigeon, especially when the birds are working already and you just want to keep their attention and keep them circling closer and closer until they lock up.

I usually only use the whistle for teal , pintails , and widgeons . I use the wingsetter .

Lotta times when birds are on their 7th fricken pass I got nothing else to tell em so ill pick up that whistle. Mallard drake, pintail, GWT, widgeon. Also if you watch birds you'll learn what piles up together. For instance: greys skirtin the decoys and you're blowing a hail call. That they've been hearing for 5 months. Well if you know they land with pintail quite a bit (hint hint) then try the pintail whistle when they get down wind. Don't be afraid to try different shite. Especially if they won't commit anyways.

Damn after 7 passes I'm red faced out of gas , and about to pass out . I hate getting old .

Well very seldomly does this actually happen. I have seen birds that wanted to hear the call but didn't want to commit. Ive been lucky the last few years to get to hunt more days than I've missed. By a large margin.

It happens a lot in our pit , early season I give out , by second split I can usually make it work .

Late in the season when the ducks hear a Susie call...they start thinking, "Screw her, that bitch has got a gun.". That's when I use a whistle more than a mallard hen call.
I used to hunt a lot of open marsh, so pintails, widgeon, and teal whistles tended to work....In fact worked too good on scaup (dos gris).

a single greenhead is usually a sucker for a whistle

I'll blow a peep peep for teal, other than that its mallard call all the way. Been working for 25 years, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Anyway, we kill mostly mallards, teal, woodies, and greys. If we kill more than ten pins or baldplates, its rare.

The drake is the one that whistles. But get a wingsetter. I blow the weigon whistle for gray ducks. They love it along with the soft single note quack. But you can blow teal pintail woodie weigon mallard drake all with the wingsetter.

Ole baldpates. I have a duck id book my dad gave me in 1985. He made me memorize it and that's what I have always called them. Baldpates.

I call em widgeons, just thought I'd throw baldplate out there to get a rise. It worked.

I have used a 6 in 1 pretty successfully. A buddy turned me on to Primos High Roller. I am going to give it a shot this year. Widgeon calls with it are a little more difficult, but I usually don't get alot of them anyway.

Whistle is my favorite call. Get my best results with it.

How do you use it? Single peeps/drake whistles? Widgeon or pintail?
Do you use it in conjunction with a mallard hen or by itself?
