49ers RB Marcus Lattimore has informed the team that he intends to retire. "After prayer and careful consideration, I have decided it’s time to end my professional football career," said Lattimore. "I have given my heart and soul to the game that I love, and it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life and help others. I have given every ounce of my energy toward making a full recovery from my knee injury, and I have made a lot of progress. Unfortunately, getting my knee fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable." Lattimore was a dart-throw fourth-round pick by the 49ers in 2013 as your classic home run swing by GM Trent Baalke. Unfortunately, it was a whiff. Lattimore's gruesome October 2012 knee injury proved to be too much to overcome. He's going back to South Carolina to complete his degree.

That's a shame. At least he made a little money.

Really looked forward to seeing what he can do.
Sounds like a great young man. Wish him the best.

I'm still happy the 49ers took a chance on him. They gave him the best care and therapy money could buy, and also a decent salary for two years.

everything i've ever heard about him makes me believe that he is genuinely a good dude. i hope he succeeds in whatever it is he chooses to do next.

Yes and no. He gets to keep his signing bonus of $300k but he didn't receive a 'salary' the last two years because he was on the non-football injury list, or something like that. But, he did take out an insurance policy his junior year that will pay out $1.7 million tax free since he didn't play in any games after the injury.
FWIW, I read an article on SBnation about it this morning.

Was just about to post this. No idea why people get off on trying to call Germans on threads, so much so that they end up being wrong
And this is very sad news. I was really hoping he would try again next year but I totally understand him wanting to close this chapter and move on.

That was his schtick for the longest time.

Dang shame he had a ton of talent, but the knee injuries kept him from a lot. I think South Carolina could've had better seasons had he stayed healthy.

Disappointing to see but I hope he can stay healthy.

That's a shame. I always hate to see injuries derail a great player.
I hope he can do well with the rest of his life and that he is smart w/ the football money he earned.

Spurrier was kind of a dick to ML in my opinion. But every time I criticize Spurrier I seem to get a ton of flack for it.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for him with the Niners. Wishing him the best in his future. (Who keeps down voting just about every reply in this thread?)
