What is the suggested timeline of these people? Were they like pre-pre historic or something?
Our timeline. I can't really explain it coherently, but they do not view time the same way we do. They can see all points of time just like Cooper did in the tesseract when he sent the messages to Murph.
They are the future generations of humanity.

But I'm struggling to understand when/where they were when they were on earth? It was people that other earthicans didn't know about, even while they were discovering new dimensions?

I edited after. They are the future generations of the same humans that Cooper and Murph saved.

Were they from earth? What is the conceivable explanation?
Well, the origin of their species was from Earth, but they'd evolved to such a point to "where" they are from is a moot point. 5th dimensional beings exist everywhere and every time simultaneously.

There is no when or where for these creatures. They're 5th dimensional beings. Humanity in the future evolved to such a point that they learned to transcend dimensions in order to obtain as much knowledge as possible and ascend to a higher plain of existence. Basically, for all intents and purposes, humans transcended to become gods, existing in all times and places simultaneously. They no longer had a physical structure, and they could be anywhere or see anything at any time they wanted to.

Honestly, I started getting a bit disappointed in Nolan for having aliens put the wormhole there, but I thought it was pure fricking genius to have it be humans from the future who do it. It shows what is theoretically possible for our species, and how we should reach for our highest possible goals.

I would have preferred Contact-like aliens.

Checking this movie out one more time tomorrow night in IMAX!

Haven't read a single page of this thread so I may be in the minority, but I didn't think the movie was great.
Segments of the movie were cool, but for the most part I thought it was a lot of flash. Cheesy first hour with semi-bad acting and character development. Minimal explanation of the plot. Lots of big words like "quantum" and "relativity" that seemed thrown in for that added "wow, they are so smart!" effect.
It took him three hours to conceptualize time as a new dimension, essentially. But most of those three hours were spent on irrelevant or slow portions of the story.
I walked out unimpressed with the movie as a whole, but I did think some parts of the movie were well done.

I have no problem with your assessment.
I am not emotionally wedded to the film or the director, so, I can say with some objectivity that your opinion is valid.

Just saw it.
It's a good movie with some awesome effects that you have to experience on the big screen, but it's nothing special. I'm glad I saw it but I'm not pumped to see it again.

You need to go see it in IMAX.

I finally got around to seeing it last night. Very good film that will definitely require some repeat viewings for me. I wasn't blown away like I was with Inception, but still really liked it and major props to Nolan for taking on such an ambitious project.

Ok so I've seen it twice now, and it just got worse.
Definitely the most disappointed I've been with a film in a long time.
It has it's moments, and it definitely looks good. Case and Tars were pretty creative character.
But as soon as they stumbled upon NASA it got pretty ridiculous.
"o hey, welcome to NASA, THANK GOD YOU'RE HERE BC WE HAVE TO LEAVE TOMORROW AND WE DON'T HAVE A PILOT AND THOUGH WE DON'T REALLY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT YOU AND YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS MISSION YOU'RE GOING TO BE THE PILOT TO SAVE MANKIND GO TELL YOUR KIDS GOODBYE."
Really? Why didn't they at least fast forward it a week or so and have him leaving then. I mean what did NASA plan on doing if he didn't show up?
Possibly my favorite scene is when they are all talking it out about how to save some time and it's like these scientist/astronauts have never even considered the prospect of dropping in and out instead of staying on the planet. So we have Coop brainstorming with the high tec computer/monitor/touch screen right in front of him and then a light goes of in his head and BOOM, flip this computer over and you have a dry erase board and highlighter like its Bob Kight drawing up a play. That cracked me up.
The time loop plot holes were pretty bad. 75 pages in I don't see that as breaking news.

So after a 2nd watch, I caught a little easter egg that I'm not sure was brought up or not...
On Murph's bookshelf (next to either the watch or the aircraft toy), there is "The Stand" written by Stephen King. The reason I found it funny is because Matthew Mcconaughey is rumored to star as the villian in the film adaption. Just a random heads up!
Great movie even the 2nd time though FWIW

Remember back to when he first got there. They were all very suspicious and weary of him until he said some kind of singularity brought on by gravity had brought him to the facility. The NASA scientist believed that beings of an immensely superior origin, who could control gravity, had opened the wormhole and thus had brought Cooper to them. As the poster above states, he was "chosen" by beings of an extraterrestrial nature to pilot the mission. Of course we find out towards the end of the movie that it was actually Cooper who had chosen himself for the mission.
