Until the first time you want to go out of town for a week with a family of 4 and don't have enough cargo space.

Other than them being cooler than a mini-van, I don't either. A few of my single friends drive Tahoes and I just don't get it, but that's their decision. They make fun of my girly Outback though.

I have a family of 4 and we have a Ford Edge and there is plenty of cargo room. We do miss having a 3rd row for toting the kids and their friends around and have started looking to replace it because of that.

growing family is the reason

I had the same issue and came to the realization that being crammed elbow to elbow in the backseat builds family camaraderie and character, especially when I'm not the one being crammed. The kids will thank me in a couple of decades, probably.

So now I need to spend a few thousand dollars and have somewhere to store this trailer while I'm not using it? No thanks.

appreciate your response. I spend a lot of time in my vehicle so comfort is a must. And from the work I do 4wd is a must

It sounds like you will be using your vehicle for a lot of working/driving, even possibly driving off road.. You sure you want to buy a new luxury vehicle for that? Seems like that would really beat up the vehicle.

Amen, dude. An extra row of seats and DVD screens are far less important than fat college savings accounts. Buy a $35K SUV and put the difference into dedicated accounts for each kid. In 10-12 years, you won't be hauling them all around simultaneously, and you'll be happy you didn't spring for all the bells & whistles.

Why not? I spend a lot of time commuting in my vehicle, so I drive what I want. I know the miles and wear and tear are goingto make it less valuable, but it makes the drive more enjoyable for me. I'd be much better served driving a 15 year old accord that cost $1500, but I work too hard to subject myself to that mind numbingly boring driving experience.

No offense, but why are you buying Infinitis if you want to go with this line of thinking? Seems kinda hypocritical.

That's great and if the OP shares your sentiments he can go buy a $61k Sequoia or $83k Lexus LX570 instead of a $35k alternative. Everyone has choices to make. I'm not criticizing those choices, just saying it makes no sense to ask why the biggest and best SUVS cost so much. The prices listed in this thread are not all encompassing for all SUVs, there are more affordable alternatives.

I'm not the OP....I don't drive a luxury anything. My commuter car, a volvo sedan, gets 28-30 hwy, 24-27 city. I can tow my 14-ft flatboat with it (no truck or SUV needed, it tows up to 2K). It is 11 years old, paid for, and I am just barely beginning to consider replacing it. I'm the one who asked the question about "why a full size SUV". I see so many on the road during my daily driving, and I don't understand the appeal at all. So many ppl I know are commuting alone and getting 18-20 mpg---fuel prices are nuts yet they never seem to do the math and understand how much the "comfy ride" is costing them.

My replacement vehicle will probably be a TDI Golf (35-55 mpg); the Audi Q3 TDI comes out next summer, but it's not worth the additional cash as I don't need AWD or the bells & whisles, or the more expensive service costs.

Back to the OP--sure, you're entitled to make whatever purchasing decision you want. Sure, you want to be comfy....but comfy shouldn't come before fully funded IRA, Coverdells for all of the growing family, and a very healthy emergency fund.

I drive a sierra Denali, bought when I was working the oilfield in S Texas and drove a lot, so I know what you mean. I like the comfortable driving experience. But you can get the same experience driving one that's a few years old for 25 thousand less.

I am currently in the market and started looking for a new SUV. I did price and build on several brands and was shocked how much they cost.

I'm in the market for a large SUV with 3 rows of seats myself. I can afford any of the vehicles you listed, but I'm thinking about getting a Honda Pilot (Touring) or 4 Runner so I don't have to fill the tank with premium unleaded gas. Wait until you have to start filling the tank with premium unleaded gas, because then you'll be shocked how much it'll cost every week.

all gas is paid for, this does not factor into my decision

I didn't think you were. I thought you were the one that had posted about the Infiniti EX. My apologies.

If your employer reimburses for gas or pays for your gas through a fleet plan, wouldn't you want to keep costs down anyway? I'd think that fuel economy would be an attractive feature--you'd be appreciated as thrifty & saving the company money.

I get reimbursed on a fixed rate, so it's in my best interest to keep costs down.

all of these items are very well taken care of. A car note will not take away from any of these items.

Then there isn't much to discuss. Fully loaded upper tier mid-full size SUV's cost 55-85k. Go get a GX460 (fsport) or LX570 and enjoy it End thread.

I'd splurge for the Land Cruiser....but the new Denalis are really cool. I'd rank them a close second.

Check out the Mercedes GL.

I think the Infiniti is a little too tacky and the newer Lexus GX models are kind of ugly.

I really like the Land Rover LR4, but someone else would have to determine if they are more reliable than the Range Rovers. The Range Rovers and the new Evoques are pretty problematic, but the Sport, which is based on the LR4, has been a little better. The potential for a lot of down time would ruin the LR4 for me.

A bad Land Crusier or GMC Denali is probably still better than a good Land Rover.
