Mid and full sized SUV's

I am currently in the market and started looking for a new SUV. I did price and build on several brands and was shocked how much they cost.
Infinity QX80 4wd $76k
Toyota sequoia 4wd limited $60k
Lexus GX460 4wd $61k
Land rover LR4 4wd $59k
GMC Yukon Denali 4wd $65k
So I then looked at mid sized and still saw very high priced
Jeep grand summit 4wd $51k
Toyota 4tunner limited 4wd $47
When did suv's get so expensive?

You can't go wrong with a Lexus GX. It's a terrific vehicle.

When every soccer mom started driving one and douches starting buying midsized and jacking them up.
With that said I have a FJ cruiser 4wd and its bullet proof . Remember with Lexus and Toyota there resale value is much higher .
Stay away from dodge ! Please

When they started putting every creature comfort from luxury cars in them.
Back in the day a 4Runner Limited just meant you had standard leather and some body cladding. Now there's nav, power running boards, heated and cooled seats, etc. Couple that with inflation, and you get expensive SUVs.

What surprised me was the small cost difference between "luxury" brands and non-luxury brands. You're not getting a whole lot more options, just better build quality and materials. But cost-wise a Toyota/Lexus or Nissan/Infiniti isn't much difference.
Have you checked out the Acura MDX? The 2015 is absolutely awesome IMO if that size fits your needs.

I have a 2010 4runner 4wd now and looking for more room. And to the heated and cooled seats, that's an option I want in my next suv.

Truth, but the OP is trying to find expensive vehicles. I looked up that Summit, it a fully loaded a fully loaded Grand Cherokee. He's talking about 51k, but the base msrp is 30k. Maybe you don't need open pore wood and the other 20k in options
? So, your answer is SUVs got so expensive when folks wanted options like 20 inch wheels, 4wd they don't need, premium leather, navitgation/dvd, 400 hp engines, heated/cooled seats, HID headlamps, etc....This post was edited on 10/14/14 at 9:00 am

appreciate your response. I spend a lot of time in my vehicle so comfort is a must. And from the work I do 4wd is a must

Look at Certified Pre-Owned ones. These days, 20,000 miles is nothing on an engine and they are almost always in excellent shape.
We've recently looked at a few CPO Infiniti JX35's and they are super nice, though a little smaller than those you listed, and priced pretty reasonably.

We understand that. The point we're trying to make is you pretty much picked fully optioned out upper tier vehicles. They're going to be very expensive, you only left out BMW, Benz, and Audi. I'd take the Lexus out of those choices. You can find cheaper options that are still comfortable, but hey you have expensive taste

Also the Lexus GX is close to 4 runner size. The Sequoia's equal is the LX570 which has a $83k base msrp.

What do you do that requires a luxury SUV with 4wd?
unless you just need the 4wd because you live in snow county?

Not sure why you were suprised. We're not talking about Ford Broncos with bench seats here. There are many cars out there that are $50k++. You want all of those same options/quality in a bigger package. More aluminum/steel for the body, bigger engine, extra transfer case for the 4wd, bigger wheels/tires, more leather for the 3rd row seats....You're not going to put a 70-80K Lexus sedan in a truck body and have it come out under 50k.

I'm curious about the need for a full sized SUV...why? I commute abt 40 miles a day, and I'm so surprised by the number of big SUVs I see making the same haul each day. The fuel bill alone would give me migranes.
It's not a catty question, but a serious one. I can understand the need for a full sized truck--towing, hauling equipment & tools, etc. But I really don't get the big SUV trend, especially if you drive lots.
I'd rather have an Audi Q3 than a bigger Lexus or Toyota. Next summer, the TDI q3 will be available in the US.....
