what do you have?

i can't for the life of me justify another $5-$6/per bulb to get the ability to individually turn them off from my phone.

come on. i get home automation..garage door, front entry, HVAC, but really? do i really need to be able to individually turn all the bulbs in my house on and off?

fwiw my outside ones are covered..i'm using the dimmable CREE in them and they come on at dusk and light up when they sense motion so i'm strictly looking at indoor lights.

I don't have any, but I'm considering it. I have an old knob-style dimmer in the living room. I recently put CFLs on it, and that hasn't worked out so well. Horrible buzzing noise at the switch. Don't care so much about them not being dimmable, but the buzzing sucks. I wonder if LEDs would fix that. Don't care about the "smart" part of it either. House is too old to mess with automation.

I go to Costco and get the High efficiency bulbs. I would like the front porch to be automated to turn on at night but that's it.

both CREE and GE are LED bulbs.

i like the CREE a bit better; you can buy a 5-pack for like $40 so that makes them a little more cost effective plus the 60 and 100 watt bulbs are dimmable which is nice and they really have the most 'natural' yellow light i've seen that mimics the good old incadescent.

however that was 6 months ago so there's probably something newer & better by now.

the GE 'gimmick' is the ability to use your phone to turn the bulbs off but you need an additional $20 or so brain (they're running a special right now).

i dont see the point of that extra money for remotely controlled bulbs.

and i freaking hate CFLs. i swear to god not a single CFL bulb i've bought has lasted longer than an incadescent and like you pointed out...DAT BUZZING

You have to get the CFL dimmable bulbs to get rid of the buzz. i have Led bulbs in the lights over my island , which are on a dimmer, and they buzz.

From what I've read, even the dimmable CFLs will buzz on the old cheap knob-style that are specifically meant for incandescent. I may just have to get rid of my dimmers or upgrade them. I only have two -- one in the living room and one in the dining room.

My house burns through lightbulbs faster than it should, though. Mostly the ceiling fans. In one room, before I replaced the ceiling fan, the fan could not run if the light was also on. I watched it burn out a bulb in under 10 seconds.

dude dont get me started on dirty power. its a fricking joke. you don't get pristine 120v all the time from the electric company. you get somewhere between 110 and 125v most of the time.

you hit a shitty 120v bulb with 126v enough and pop goes the filament.

hold that shite up to the light after it blows and notice how much filament is still left in the bulb.

130v bulbs help..but GOOD LUCK FINDING THEM LOCALLY. only people who know about this and are smart enough to go to bulbs.com or one of those sites that sells 130v bulbs would even have a prayer of discovering this on their own. a 130v bulb with withstand those shitty power surges when you flip the light on better and *gasp* you will actually get a couple years use out of them.

frick this shite.

electricity, water and internet data caps. its all bullshite and the consumer loses every time there's an 'error' in metering.

Older dimmer switches will need to be changed out to work with LED bulbs. Its a quick and cheap fix.

I've got some Collection LED bulbs off of Newegg last year for between $6 and $8 per bulb. Haven't had any go out on me yet.

The Cree bulb is $0.97 cheaper on amazon if you buy a 6-pack. What brand is much cheaper on this site compared to elsewhere?

Link to a reliable tutorial? Some I've read indicate I'd need to change my wiring in some way. I have two types -- forgot what the terminology is, three-way or two-way... the living room has two switches on the same light. One is a regular switch and one is a dimmer. The regular switch has to be on for the dimmer switch to function. Same setup in the dining room; however, either switch works both ways in that room.

Certain dimmers work with certain LEDs from what I gather. I'm my house I used all feit led br40s and on there site they list dimmers that work. No buzzing and dim nicely.

As for the 130v bulbs I don't like them...they are not as bright as there 120v counterparts. That's part of the reason for them lasting longer.

My main issue was cfl sucks and led up until recently had a low color rendering index score. Regular incandescent has 100...most LEDs and cfl have around 80 and they wash out colors I find. The Feits I just put throughout have a 92 cri and look pretty much like the incandescent they replace. 100w of light using 19w in a br40. Few more years and there will be more high cri options.

CREE makes some high cri style bulbs but they probably cost more.

It's pretty easy, you shouldn't need to change out any wires. Just make sure you buy the right switch and take a picture of all the wires on the existing switch before removing. If you wire it wrong all that will happen is it won't turn on. You won't burn the house down.

I dont have any. I am just picky about light...I like the color of regular incandescent but they are being phased out...luckily they are getting good at LEDs and there color. CFL were never close...cant stand them! I put 88 Feit BR40s in the house im building and went from a possible 6,336 watts (If I used the 72w halogens I planned on) to 1,672w with the LEDs.

I'm considering getting two for the lamps on our night stands... I don't see the point having them anywhere else. Would I just need the bulbs?
