Sunday, installed it, downloaded the app...and I love this thing. Does everything the Nest does but is half the price. It learns how long it takes your house to get to your set temp for the first few weeks to ensure efficiency. I can control the damn thing from my phone.

I saw one for $85 the other day on a deal site and didn't realize they were that low in price. I paid about that much for a normal thermostat replacement a few years ago.

So all you need is the thermostat and the app? I remember seeing some smart home standards required some sort of gateway/hub device.

you log into the thermostat once its installed and it joins your wireless network...have to create an account online, but yeah thats about it.

Hopefully you don't get divorced but if you do, and your wife gets the house. Well you know what to do from there

I suppose I'll be looking into this. Always loved the Nest my friend has, but never wanted to spend the money

no logs that I am aware of...but I can pull up the app and see what the temp is in my house vs my set temp for that time of day.

If you want to use 1 app for multiple devices, you can get a hub that will integrate everything. I have the myq garage door control and a Honeywell wifi thermostat. Each have their own app. I also have a Wink hub that can communicate with each of the devices, and I can use just the Wink app to do both, close the garage door and adjust the thermostat.

The main idea behind getting a gateway/hub is to set up scenes that will control multiple devices with 1 click. You can set up a "leaving house" scene that will set the alarm, adjust the thermostat, turn off lights, and lock doors. Then when you get home, another click will reverse all of that.

Then it doesn't do everything the Nest does.

I've wanted one of these, but it appears I'd have to mess with some additional wiring. My house is fairly old, and it doesn't have the required external power wiring for these wifi thermostats. Not sure how much I'd use it anyway. I'm home all day and night, so it's pretty much constant temp.

That would be the single biggest thing I would want to see.. I want a report to see where I am losing power so I can fix it. if it doesn't do that then how is it different from my current programmable stat where I have to guess what times to set temp?

I had to go into my attic and switch some wires and add a jumper.

does it also control the whole house humidifier?

I ask because about two inches above the newer thermostat in the house I am closing on next week there is this horribly obnoxious looking humidifier controller from the late 70's that just makes me sick to my stomach. I'm wondering if I can find something that controls both and is big enough to just cover the whole up where the wires come out for it as well.

This thing looks fricking ridiculous. I almost vomited when I saw it, but the house was too good of a steal.

But it is still ignorance.

I got the Nest for free, so I didn't worry about having to do a cost/benefit analysis. Also, there are ways to get a Nest for cheaper. Some electric companies credit your bill for up to the purchase price of one. This isnt only for the Nest though.

lol, I love defensiveness of purchases. We need a Nest vs. Honeywell thread now.

I know the Nest will. You can also control multiple Nest thermostats in your house from your phone. I only looked into the Nest and none of the others. Some of the others might do the same.
