Excellent point.

I'd probably pay him just because I'm a sucker for kids trying to earn their way.

Maybe make up a flyer with all sorts of odd jobs and he could have that listed. Others could be mowing, raking leaves, washing cars, etc.

I think this is a good idea as it will prepare him for a long & fulfilling career as a garbageman.

I understand the courtesy and neighborly thing, but it's not reasonable for him to put out 20-40 cans twice a week as a courtesy.

I'd tell him to offer the trash cans as a starter service. Just go offer Mrs. Betty and when he's doing it to let her know he's available to do other jobs around the yard/house if needed.

He's thinking of charging $2 per day which would be $4 per week.

I pay my kids .25 day to bring in mail and newspaper. We have long driveway and I hate walking down there and one day my son asked how he could make money and I thought of this. Instead of just giving him an allowance he works for it.

If a 12 year old offered the trash can service and told me it was his idea to earn money I would be so impressed I would hire him even though I didn't need the service. Probably tip him too like I do a lemonade stands. I'm sure other work chance should come from it when somebody needs leaves raked or driveway swept off etc. Awesome kid

For a 12 year old I'd pay for him to wash my car. My soap. My water. But he must do a good job. The worst car wash in the world is HS cheerleaders raising money for camp.

This.

I worked for an older couple in college doing general maintenance and washing cars. They drove maybe 4-5 times per week. I made $10/hr cash for 15-20 hrs per week. I washed on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. 3 nice cars (Navigator, Jag then MB, and Z4).

Teach him how to do it properly, 2 bucket method, decent supplies (<$100). Honestly could make a killing if done well. I've considered starting a detailing business. People pay good money for a good wash/wax.

I wouldn't pay that for such a small task

I would. It's about 40 yards down my drive the the street, and we got three big arse cans that are always full. Looks like it'd be a chore. I wouldn't know.

I think it's a great idea.

* work ethic
* responsibility
* learn value of money
* learn how to run a business

$16/mth to never have to deal with that sounds good to me..the right number may be a little higher or lower, let him figure it out by asking for the business.

I tried getting one of my family friends signs to do this over the summer to make some money. They live in a pretty nice neighborhood that I’m sure he could pick up some houses on. Kid doesn’t want to get out there and go do it though SMH.

A better approach would have him ask what the neighbors need/want done.

My nephew is doing this in his neighborhood(Pittsburgh area)……$20/month.

Brings it out/in

About 40 customers.

ETA: Best lesson that it has taught him is, when it is single digits, snow on the ground, and/or raining, he still has to get up and get the cans out before school.

Might be too little effort for some folks as opposed to having to keep up with billing.

10 year old neighbor kid has been washing cars, windows, and garbage cans around the community. I told him I would buy him a pressure washer next summer so that he can grow his business and power wash my property.

Updates? You bumped a post from 2014 about a 12 year old. That kid is 21 now, lol. How many life updates are you looking for?

Buy a power washer at harbor freight or costco
Teach him how to use it to clean sidewalks and driveways
Profit. Could easily get 50-100$ per house

My kid gets money for chores. So, this would fall into that category.
