Me and a few friends will be staying at a camp that has a pier on the bayside of grand isle on the west side of the island at the end of October. Our pier is behind the rock formations. We wont have a boat and I was wondering, will we be able to fish successfully at night/morning from there or do we need to just go to the marina pier. Should we drop a light in the water? Or is it just a crapshoot no matter what. Thanks for the help

Pure crap shoot. We have a light in the water at Pirates Cove, and see lots of small trout at night. Sometimes we will fish it when we see the trout popping, but it's almost always small ones. Get you a Vudu shrimp under a cork, a beer, and a chair, and give it a try!

Beats watching TV.

Get a few different color lights to use, sometimes the yellow works or a whiter color.

The pier I was on had 2 lights on nightly about 20 ft apart and casting just outside the light seemed to work the best.

Usually smaller trout early with some larger ones showing up later.

Fish did not normally bite before 10 pm and you could catch them early am as well normally.

I lived there a lot one year and it all kinda blurred together, so take what it all with a grain of salt.

My goal for the night fishing was normally dinner for tomorrow night or a few nights, so I did not usually stay out too long.

Great advice,we will definitely have some lines in the water and drink a few brews. Knowing the crew im going with, we will prob stay up late so hopefully we will have a little action too!

Yeah go out cast a few times - like 15 min, if they are there you will know, if not back inside to avoid the bugs.

Are there lights on the pier already? I'm guessing there are as most on that side have them. If the trout are there, you will be able to see them. As someone said, for some reason, the larger trout will show up later. If they are there the night before, I always try to get up and go out there about an hour before daylight and load up.

You want to fish the lights with ultralight reels and really small white crappie baits. Think 1/32 oz jig heads and small white curly tail grubs. If you need more weight to cast, add a split shot about 12" up the line.

I'd avoid the marina pier, it's a junk show after 9pm or at least it is during the high summer months.

If you don't have a boat, you might want to check out Elmers in the morning. We did ok from civil twilight to about 9am out there. I have no idea what the tides are doing this weekend, but it's worth the trip on a nice falling tide. You might fish the end of island, across from the rocks @ bridgeside, you could get lucky with some fat trout. This years bait of choice was light colored top-waters, last year was sliding weights with minnows. The fishing changes on that island so much it's nearly impossible to dial in with just one weekend to play.

We fished off the pier at bridgeside for 3 nights, 3 weeks ago. Ton of small white trout and a bunch of small specks. The bigger fish might have started to move in by now

I would imagine if they have a pier, they will have lights. I make double rigs with 1/16 oz. jig heads. Try different colors. You're casting at the same places so the fish see the same bait coming every time. Use an ultra lite sac au lait rig for casting. Have plenty of beer or wine. A great time can be had.
