Will John Mayer go down as the best songwriter of the millennials generation?

You cannot deny his ability to play extremely well. From fast shredding to smooth and tasteful licks, to intricate picking patterns anyone who says he's not extremely talented doesn't play an instrument.
As for his songwriting, I feel like people will look back on tracks like "Stop this train", "Gravity", "Slow Dancing in a Burning room", etc. and be in awe at what they missed out on (for those who are writing him off now). I am fairly deep in the music circle in my city and I don't think I've ever come across a decent musician of any style to say that Mayer is anything less that stellar.
Even going back and listening to his extremely soft acoustic tracks from "inside wants out" the chords are very intricate and nothing you hear out of todays writers (G,D,C) who just use the capo to change the key of the song.
His newest "Paradise Valley" album still has the same quality lyrics and music that he became who he is today on ("Wild fire", "Dear Marie")
His audience is vast. Girls and guys love him, other musicians are in awe of him, rappers respect him, this dude has such a broad reach.
Not to mention this list -
Jessica Simpson (in her prime)
Jennifer Love Hewitt
Jennifer Aniston
Katy Perry
Taylor Swift
Some very rare underrated song -
Taking On Water
Man on the Side

He is a good guitar player no doubt but a terrible songwriter.
Isaac Brock comes to mind as one of the best millennials songwriters.

I'm trying not to sound like a homer and I'm all for debate of who is better, but how on earth can you say he's a terrible songwriter?

The guy is a top level guitar player. One of the best of the 2000's

It's not for me, I prefer lord Huron or grizzly bear for lyrics

Florida Georgia line is "terrible"
The worst you can give him is "meh"
Let's be honest here

I dont think you know what shredding means. There is not one single harmonic lick or scale run throughout that entire 7+ mins of playing. That was straight blues.

I was definitely using the term shred very loosely. If you think the dude who studied and teaches Berklee classes on his off time cant do some sweep picked arpeggios or a diminished scale then by all means, post some of your guitar playing and show me how good he should be.

I see almost nothing in the OP relevant to him being a great songwriter.
Who the frick cares?

So who's a better songwriter?
Ryan Adams was definitely better in his prime but he's gone to complete shite.

I'll also throw Jason Isbell in the ring

Based on your OP, literally anyone. You did not argue for him being a great songwriter, you argued that he's a great guitar player and has dated a number of pretty women.

I named a few non radio songs that I think are over looked and will be looked back on as great. He's been a solo act that made it from the ground up. He's professionally trained and plays multiple instruments. He's been nominated for 16 grammy's and won 7.
I can't make you listen to any of his music. I'm simply asking, will he go down as the best songwriter of the millennials generation? You came in with a giant flamethrower and didn't even attempt to answer.

Point

Has nothing to do with the question

Point, but not a great one. Using the award (and hits) criteria, I could argue for Martin Sandberg (Max Martin), who has written 58 top-ten hits in the US and won ASCAP's "songwriter of the year" 7 times.

Why should I answer a question based on an argument if you don't even make the argument?

I think being able to write and play on multiple instruments absolutely adds to a pitch for songwriting.

Agreed. This thread is a joke.
