God people like you are insufferable - throwing out the name of a singer that nobody has ever even fricking heard of in a discussion about if John Mayer is going to be remembered as a Clapton or Dylan of this generation.

"Treme" utilized Davis to characterize annoying pseudo-music intellectuals like you.

And John Mayer was born in 1976. He's not a millennial.

If you've ever been to a Mayer concert (I've been two 2) the average age/demographic is probably a 25 year old recently graduated sorority girl. There's also lots of 40 year old men who love great music and a ton of 18-20 year old girls.

He qualifies as a "millennial" in that his audience is made up in large part by millennials.

his last two albums are not poppy at all with the exception of 2 songs and his lyrics have matured immensely. It's not the bad comparison you're making it out to be - and who else of Mayer's age group could potentially carry that label regardless? Ryan Adams and who else? People that can't sell more than 2,000 tickets in Chicago don't count.

I've been to several of his shows. Early on the crowds were younger but over time his crowds have become much older. I don't think his newer albums appeal as much to the sorority girl crowd.

Well music is changing and his stuff really hasn't. He didn't go super pop like im sure his label would probably like. "Paradise Valley" is just as musically and lyrically in depth as his other stuff, barring Continuum which is his best IMO. Dylan touched people in a way Mayer won't be able to. But like I said, Mayer is too big for some people to give his non radio stuff a chance.

He wasn't comparing the two musically. He was comparing them popularity wise. And Given what I just witnessed at Music Midtown, Mayer isn't slowing down.

Listen to songs like "wheel", "stop this train", "edge of desire", "3X5"

You can't honestly say thats not exceptionally good writing. Even if it's not your particular style of music, the structure and lyrics are very advanced but still holding onto his acoustic pop feel

are they as popular? of course not. they aren't writing pop music.

Josh Ritters' another new world may be better than anything I've ever heard in my life. Chris thile and the punch brothers do a great cover, but that song is fricking amazing.

Damien rice and Ryan Adams write their fair share of pop music.

I feel like you're still assuming I'm giving good songwriting praise to mayers radio stuff. You aren't going to even understand where im coming from until you get over how popular he is and that a bunch of girls wanna nail him.

All opinions too. None of which have a shot (barring Adams) at being remembered in 30 years as one of today's best songwriters. You're still assuming I think Mayer is the best. It's not what I'm saying

Dude. I don't know anybody who considers him a great songwriter. Good guitar player, sure. But his lyrics are meh and I don't get must heartfelt emotion and honesty from his overall product.

Great singer-songwriters aren't exactly mainstream in this day and age, so I don't see your point about being the most remembered. If you wanna play that game, it's going to be somebody like Kanye West.
