They aren't near as talented musically as Mayer is though, and his songwriting is being underrated due to some of his pop songs.

If Ryan Adams was at Mayers level of fame, the same people would hate him. And if john mayer wasn't a pretty boy and still just semi popular in theatres around the south, this music board would have a "continuum album" thread every week. It's always the same people. Never heard an actual musician hate on JM.

So John Mayer and Jason Isabella are the benchmarks for modern songwriters?

My how rock has fallen. Sad really.

I mentioned quite a few. I'm basically looking at musicians under 40.

Jack white, trucks, Bonamassa, Mayer, Isbell, Gary Clark jr. I'm obviously missing some others here and just naming what comes to mind, but I see artists like these being remembered, respected and listened to 20+ years from now.

trucks, Bonamassa,

These two are very talented at guitar but are sorely lacking anything resembling songwriting skills. Derek Trucks is great but has made a career out of re-hashing the Allman Brothers and Derek & the Dominos.

Look man, I know you don't play music. Your opinion is strictly from watching fingers. If you want to argue songwriting then go ahead, Isbell is rad. But straight guitar playing Mayer has him beat by a long shot. I can't believe that's even coming up. You may be the only person including Jason Isbell who thinks that.

Piano lessons started at 5: Two full length albums on iTunes ready for your queer arse to dl. Played all the piano, organ, guitar, on them as well as keys on 10 or so albums of musicians around the south east.

I'll fight you under the bleachers at 3

flagpole at 4 brotha!

Mayer is a mediocre copycat of SRV/Eric Clapton.
All his licks are pretty trite and repetitive and he doesn't have a great sense of melody. His improv is pretty weak and never surprising, and he frequently hits off notes. He's sloppy a lot of times live.

All in all, as a player he's pretty boring and overrated as a guitarist. He doesn't do anything different.

So you're pretty much ignoring his studio albums? Room for squares, inside wants out, heavier things, born and raised, paradise valley?

Jeff Beck - "But John Mayer, he seems to be the one to fly the blues flag; he's the new Eric Clapton, I would imagine."

Buddy guy - He declares John Mayer "one of the great ones coming up,"

Chuck Leavell - says Mayer is one of the best guitar players maybe anywhere. “Man, he’s an outstanding guitar player,” he said. “I was amazed with how he could come up with songs on spot.” He’d tell Leavell, give him 20 minutes and come up with something brand new.

John Scofield - Yeah, and you know John Mayer is a serious blues player, and he’s very very good. I was lucky to get him on my record, and it wasn’t even my idea. It was Steve Jordan’s idea who was the producer, and then he became Mayer’s producer. So I lucked out and John was wonderful.

I don't know what you've seen or heard, but John Mayer is an outstanding musician. I saw him jam out on keys with Ben folds and even he was in awe. I feel like you just hate JM to hate him.

If you're going to mention his studio albums, you mention Continuum. That is his best album, and he says so himself.

Well I was saying apart from his blues stuff. Continuum is by far his best writing and best album. Monster was hating on his blues so I was pointing out that his acoustic albums are very different than today's stuff, yet still intricate and good.
