Most chicks are irresponsible with money, especially in their early 20's. If you can talk some sense into her (good luck) then there isn't an issue. If you guys go further along, you can always use it as a we can't get married until you pay your debts kind of deal (which probably won't work because chicks don't think logically). But good luck, maybe you have a good one

It's more of a mentality. Most girls think that 'things' give them worth. What they don't understand is that having a Coach bag doesn't change your status to others. It just looks more ghetto. Responsibility is much more attractive than expensive shoes.

We live in Ohio. So all this BR and Louisiana talk doesn't mean much. And that's not really the point of the thread. I apparently was way off in determining a reasonable rent liability to obtain. I can scratch that from OP if it would help move on from the topic

Hey now...I like Coach. But only the all leather non logo ones. Those are the ones that don't go out of style imo.

The ones with the logo all over it look dated I will agree though.

Kind of my thoughts. At 24, a lot of people live with roommates to save up money and pay off debt.

It's not ridiculous not to, but when you can't save a penny and live so dangerously paycheck to paycheck, seems like it would be an obvious solution to better your financial position.

She makes 33k a year before taxes, yet signed a lease for a 1 BR apartment that's $650/month. Not including utilities.

That doesn't appear to be bad.

He still won't tell us this magic city where $650 a month gets you a really nice 1 bedroom apartment.

May not be a complex. There are plenty of garage apartments that are that price around BR area.

I could give you good advice but everybody will bitch at me for it. People tell me my views are outdated with the cool kids these days. I'm all about fiscal responsibility and family values but all anybody my age cares about is having swag and getting teen pregnant

I welcome your advice, apparently were like-minded. Maybe I'm old school too but just feel like even at 24 it's not too early to be fiscally responsible and set yourself up for the future

Maybe she wants to live on her own at some point in her life?

Nothing wrong with that. I recommend everyone live completely alone at some point in their life before marriage. Makes you truly appreciate and get to know who you are and have that feeling of being self sufficient. Maybe she sees a future with her bf. Assumes they will be married in a couple years and would like to use this time now to experience living alone. So she isn't going from living to roommates to living with her husband.

It's a year lease....and again she's only 24. She can always downgrade or get a roommate if she sees that she is financially stretched living on her own.

If she's a paycheck to paycheck liver, cheaper rent will not change that. There will be more to buy

I think the positives here are almost minimal credit card debt and she has a college degree. You talking to her, or maybe even offering to help may work. I wrote my roommates bills out for her because she hated doing it. If her parents didn't teach her money management, then she doesn't know what she's doing

The vacation with her mom should not be held against her IMO. She's 24 and in her mind could afford it, even if it meant eating ramen for the next week

She should dump him because he'll be the type to freak out at her spending $100 at Sephora

At 33k a year and 650 in rent this is almost a given.

No shite. After 8 months he is trying to control her money. The girl should log in so we can tell her to run.
