A day late, but..

The Meaning of Wild

quote:

“A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”

I went on a tarpon fishing trip once in Cancun, MX. We drove for almost 2 hrs north and better than an hr of that was on a dirt road. It was nothing but small mangrove islands. Absolutely middle of nowhere. It was stunning just how beautiful it was. Water was crystal clear and you were hunting more than fishing and there were fish everywhere. I jumped 5 and landed 1 tarpon and 1 snook.

It's an experience that I will never forget.

I don't have the breadth of experience that you do roger, but of all the terrain I've walked in LA, I'll submit the cypress and tupelo swamps in The Joyce and Sherburne WMAs. It's amazing to walk through them. Wish I had a good picture on hand to share. I'll try to add one tomorrow.

Second place goes to the Florida parishes rivers. Absolutely beautiful.

Most folks who visit Yellowstone never even see the designated wilderness area. Pretty sad, because it's spectacular.

Louisiana has three designated wilderness areas, probably the best known is Kisatchee Hills.

Some parts of La are beautiful, I don't think the State gets all the credit it should.

Very unique place in the lower 48, looks a lot like some parks in Ak or the Canadian Rockies. North Cascades is also pretty spectacular.

One of my favorite lower 48 wilderness areas is Trinity Alps in Northern Cal, not far from the Oregon border.

I wouldn't go that far, but we do have some very beautiful swamp around here.

I've been to Yellowstone, Glacier, and Banff. All are extremely beautiful places!
