Stumbled across this recent article. Tarpon is definitely high on my wish list to catch that hasn't been crossed off yet.

I've heard about there being a hole in the lake about 40ish feet deep that they can be found. Actually heard it's close enough for people to kayak (that would be a blast). Its just tough fishing. A lot of sitting around waiting to see or mark fish. Not enough people want to try.

It is crazy the places they'll show up. I've been lucky enough to cast at small one's in the freshwater canals in bayou black (no luck catching). It's like you're bass fishing, then a 2-3 foot tarpon blows up on bait fish.

There are several deep holes around the lakefront airport and Little Woods that can be productive this time of year.

I caught four of them from 2000-2005. Nothing huge biggest likely about 70 lbs, but wanted to do it to say I had done it. Once Katrina hit and closing off the MRGO everything I have heard says they aren't here like they were. We used to fish the holes on the south shore. It was a lot of fun but a lot of sitting around waiting too. For my money to catch a tarpon in LA I would go to mouth of South pass or West Delta. Mouth of Tante Phine pass used to be great too but I haven't seen tarpon there in a long time.

My dad was just talking to me yesterday about this. Him and his brother apparently used to catch them back in the 50s-60s.

It's definitely close enough to kayak. You'll need a finder to spot the drop off though.

in late 70s saw about 10 caught maybe 30-40 hook ups

Reeled a few close to boat in 70s and 80s

landed one in early 80s...

funny is most of ours never came from the spots listed in this or other articles..

last tarpon I saw in lake was early 2000s...

my guess is closing mr go is restoring tidal flow that made em go in the old days...

also.. before any on you say they are going into the lake to spawn.. WRONG... they spawn offshore..

they follow what they eat..

more effictive than sitting in the "holes".. which I haven't done since the 70s.....

is to glass looking for fish, slicks or bait... and .. wait for it... mixing water or rip/current lines...

if you can find a drop off.....kabooom

if I list the general locations where most of the tarpon are.....I will get beat up by a friend of mine from NO..

and... you can paddle a yack to one of them from a two lane road....

Back in the '70s, early 80's, a friend of my dad would fish for tarpon off Lincoln Beach. I specifically remember that w would drift fish using live bait. If I can remember correctly, he used live mullets.

I remember he did catch a few, don't remember how many, but he caught a big one, and got itmounted and had it hung in his office.

Both are gone now, my dad passed in '86, and he passed about 10 years later.

That's the real difficult part of tarpon fishing. It's finding where they are hanging out. One year it may be one place, the next it may be different. It may be month to month. If you aren't fishing regularly, you can't just go out on a day trip and expect to find them. You may get lucky, and your prediction worked out. But there's a better chance that you are going to do nothing.

For the Tarpon rodeo, the fish were found in Grand Bayou and word spread. Most everyone fished there for the three days and a decent amount of fish were caught. If you were out there by yourself, it could have taken a looooong time to figure that out. I'm not going fish the lake for them or anywhere else without someone else like a charter captain getting the word out that there are tarpon in an area.

I've been stuck with friends who want to try in a new area and it was a long day of drinking and staring at water. I haven't tarpon fished much, but the people I've been with seem to have a pretty open relationship with all the other fisherman as far as letting everyone know where the fish are.

Tarpon making grand reappearance in Lake Pontchartrain

quote:

"It's pretty awesome being able to do this right in our backyard," Hibbs said. "I've been seeing them anywhere from Seabrook to about the south shore of the Trestles. I've been seeing them the past couple of years in that area, but the numbers this year -- I'm really just blown away by it.

"We were seeing them back in June; we normally don't start seeing them until August."

wick where in the bay is Blakley Island? Guy told me it was full of tarpon last week. Not big ones but big school of 40-60 pounders. Said they schooled up a big bunch of mullet and dozens went airborne on them at once. (That would be a cool pic)
